If you've had your share of daydreams about Andy Gibb, you may be surprised to discover that Andy calls himself "the biggest daydreamer in show business."
We wondered what in the world Andy has to daydream about now that he's become, before his 21st birthday, one of the biggest stars in the world.
"Oh, no, you've got it wrong," he says. "I don't daydream about show business or my career. That's going along fine. No problems there. I daydream about life outside the celebrity circus. I firmly believe that every performer has to be two people -- the one he shows to the public and the one he keeps for himself."
You can be pretty sure Andy's life will not be a stormy one. Like his brothers, Andy just isn't made for the wild life. He wants to be a rock 'n' roll star but he doesn't want the traumas, the heartaches. Who does? But Andy doesn't even want the parties!!!
"I've gone to a couple of these grand Hollywood dos," he says. "I wasn't impressed. Everybody stands around pretending not to notice everybody else. And there's a devastating and very obvious and cliqueishness. You can tell in a second who's hot and who's not. I was very sad at one party to see one lovely young lady, still young, being shoved aside because she's no longer such big news. She looked sad too. And it was really rather embarrassing. I'm not going to let that happen to me. Nobody can stay on top all the time. If your social standing depends so seriously on your current standing in the star system, something is wrong with your values system."
Andy describes himself as a romantic and, although he doesn't say it in so many words, he is obviously still stung by the failure of his teenage marriage.
"I believe in love, to coin a phrase," he says. "I want to stay away from serious involvements with anybody for a few years at least. I know you can't always plan these things. But I used to be in love with the idea of being in love. Now I'd rather let nature take its course. You can only pretend for so long. If the right woman exists, we'll find each other. I'm not looking."
Up close Andy turns out to be not only better looking than on TV or album covers (bet you didn't think that was possible), but he is also an extremely thoughtful young man.
"I'm normal," he says. "I like nothing better than to laze around on my boat when I'm not working. Some of that daydreaming is a kind of work, too, because my random thoughts often turn up in my music. I guess it isn't very interesting for a story, but I'm also pretty happy. I don't let too much get me down. If I am down it's usually because I'm tired and feeling the need to hibernate at home in Miami Beach. There's something so soothing about the water. Maybe it's because I'm a Pisces, but I can't imagine a life without the ocean close by."
When Andy says he daydreams he doesn't mean to imply he is a brooder. Far from it.
"I'm not terribly self-analytical," he says. "It's hard for me to think about myself all the time. I'm a middle-of-the-road sort of guy. If I believe in anything it's just in letting life flow. I do the best I can. Other than that none of us has much control, do we?"
