Marriage is a very important responsibility. To make a bond with another person, to join yourselves as one. It does not matter who you are. Even a teenage superstar!!!
Teenage marriages have been thought of as disaster for many years. A lot of teen marriages end in divorce (although all of them do not).
The same thing goes for so-called “Hollywood” marriages, where the couples are stars. There are many couples who have survived show biz, but then again there have been a lot of couples who have broken up under the star pressure.
Put the two together - teen marriage and star couples - and it would seem to spell trouble. Or would it? Well, Cher was married as a teenager and she has been divorced twice. Teen fans have their most recent example, Andy Gibb, whose marriage failed as soon as he reached stardom.
Now, Donny Osmond has taken the plunge into matrimony. How will it affect him? Will he take the advice of his fellow star Andy Gibb? Does Donny have what it takes to make a marriage work?
“You have to be mature,” Andy says, “and you have to be dedicated to the other person, so that your understanding will be deeper. I have a hectic life - the girl who shares it with me has to be understanding.”
Well, as a mature person, Donny has surely proved himself. He has been performing for most of his life, carrying the Osmond family on his hits and then performing weekly on his national television show which will continue next fall. He may only be 20 but he seems to be doing pretty well. If Donny isn't mature by now, he should be well along his way toward adult sophistication.
“It can't work if you aren't flexible. A person in the entertainment business has to be able to change their course on a moment's notice.”
How flexible is Donny? And how flexible is his wife Debra Glenn? Can she handle Donny's busy schedule?
Well, Debra is not from the busy world of show business, which is for the better. If she can be flexible, then she will not mind being by Donny's side.
On the other hand, Donny can give the same consideration to Debra and help her to live her life.
“The main thing is love,” Andy says thoughtfully, “You really have to love someone to be married.”
Well, there certainly isn't any doubt that Donny is in love. He hasn't bothered to hide his face form the camera, especially when he is with his own true love. Donny is becoming a symbol for the re-awakening of young love. Young people can love deeply, no matter who they are.
“Your career is important when you are on top,” Andy offers. “And sacrifices have to be made when you want to stay together.”
Donny has proven himself in the sacrifice department. He is dedicated to his family and his business. His wife will have to fit into the huge network of the Osmonds' complex empire. If she and Donny are to stay together, she will no doubt have to sacrifice. Their deep religious bond will also help them to work out any compromises.
“Finally,” Andy says, “you have to grow.” “I'm growing every day,” Donny replies.
