Where was Andy? If you looked around you this summer, you saw just about every other teen star on tour. Led by Leif and Shaun, everybody was out there, touring their eyebrows off! Naturally, summertime-summertime-sum-sum-summertime (okay, we'll stop!) is the time for all the big tours, especially if you're a teen fave, and Andy's absence was more than conspicuous!
One reason that summer's such a big time for tours is that there are no school nights in the summer, and thus by touring during June, July, August and part of September, faves give their fans the best possible shot at seeing them. Your faves usually release new albums around this time, too, and the tours are set up to coincide with that. With all this in mind, where in the double toothpicks was Andy Gibb? He's still the top teen fave in America, riding right up there at the head of all our polls, and none of the other top teen power houses (powerhice?) have been able to usurp him! So what happened? Why wasn't he out there, holding his own, not to mention his throne?
There was some vicious rumors being spread around by people who are jealous of Andy and his three super famous brothers, the Bee Gees, that more than suggested that Andy didn't tour `cause his bros did! They said that the Bee Gees were worried that if the whole family toured at one time, Andy would steal their thunder - so they asked him to stay home! Well, of course we all know that's a hunk of junk - and a pretty nasty one at that! - but still, we decided to take the question to Andy himself, and find out right from his loverly lips why he opted to stay home this summer. Andy just smiled at us, almost as if he expected the question, then he replied, “I can't say I don't go along with the formula of putting out a record and touring. I like to tour in support of a new album and give people a chance to hear my new music in person, but I would have had to rush to finish the album in time to do a summer tour and I wouldn't . . . and couldn't . . . do that. I wanted to give the people who like my music the best possible album.”
So what's Andy been doing that's made him so busy and gave him a late start with the new album (no title yet)? Well, his first tour (first biggie) lasted into the fall and he admits it took him awhile to get back to normal after that. Then the holidays started and he traveled back to England for the traditional family get-togethers. Then, between movie offers, TV appearances, and more offers, Andy got to work with his brothers on the TV special to celebrate UNICEF's International Year Of The Child. As you know, the Bee Gees and Andy have kindly donated publishing rights from songs to this worthy cause, and also got a lot of other stars involved and put together a concert and TV spectacular.
This took a lot of Andy's time and when that project was over, he sat down and began writing songs. Andy's very serious about song-writing and the new album will contain a lot more of his own material. However, he doesn't just feed his inside-jukebox a few nickels and start writing things down as fantastic song ideas just pop into his head. Andy really works at it all, and it takes time. And Andy is one star who refuses to be rushed, or pressured, by deadlines. He can't really be creative under that set of circumstances, and he has to finish something when he finishes!
When the long-awaited album is ready, Andy will be, too. He realizes it would have been great if he'd been out there this summer with the rest of the music world, including his brothers, but after the summer rush is over and school sets in, we're probably going to be awfully glad to see him out there on stage, socking his new music to us! So what if it's a school night and we may have to fling a few extra snits to get to go and see him? So, it'll be worth it! Andy as for losing his crown, Andy doesn't even want to be a king. He feels there's plenty of room for everyone, and that Leif and Shaun and the others - including his famous brothers - aren't rivals. Andy sees them as fellow artists, and figures they're all in the great big music whirl together. That kind of thinking makes him more of a king than ever!
Since all work and no play makes Jack a complete nerd, even Andy's taken a little time away from his song-writing and the recording of his new album. As previously reported, he's bought a 58' boat. It's a Hatteras, with a motor, and although Andy's not had the time to do a lot of boating around, he's so crazy about the craft, he's been staying overnight on it a lot. He says he can think better near the ocean.
Well, we don't know how to put this, but Andy isn't exactly lonely on that boat. Now you know we're leading up to something - don't you? Don't get nervous - it's definitely not what you're thinking - just bear with us… Anyhoo, maybe Andy had been working too hard - maybe that was it! - but one day he'd just had enough so he decided to quit all the work until tomorrow and attend a celebrity auction-dinner he'd been dying to go to. We don't mean to suggest they were going to auction off celebs, or have them for dinner, although Andy might have been a lot more “lonely” if that'd been the case. What happened was a concert by the Florida Philharmonic, and there were appearances by music greats like Dave Brubeck, and an auction to raise $$ for charity. A lot of stars attended the goodie, and Andy decided to be one of them!
Everything went great during the dinner, Andy enjoyed himself, and then he went right on enjoying as the lights went down and the musical part of the program blasted forth. It was during the auction that he lost his marbles . . .
Oh, we're only kidding, but in a minute, you'll see why! All sorts of unusual things were for sale, and for a long time, Andy had been thinking about having his own horse. It'd be wonderful to ride it along the beach at sunset. Well, there just happened to be a horse for sale, and before he knew what was happening, Andy was bidding!
Suddenly he wasn't a bidder any longer. He was the proud owner of a horse! And not just any horse - it's a two-year-old with an incredible bloodline, including Kentucky Derby winner Bold Ruler. The horse is so promising, Andy may hire a trainer and race his new horselet!
You'd think that'd be enough for the evening, right? You're wrong. After buying the horse, Andy decided to make another dream come true. He's always loved balloons, all the way from the birthday party variety to the colorful giants that sail the winds. So, he bought himself a pair of tickets for a ride in a hot air balloon!
No, he won't be taking his horse. He won't have to since he has another brand new friend. No, no - you still don't have to panic! You see, before the auction ended, Andy was also moved to purchase (are you ready?) a lion! It's only a cub, born in captivity and very friendly. As of this writing, it's about the size of a German Shepherd, and fortunately, lion's take awhile to grow and Andy won't wake up one morning soon staring into Jaws III. Also as of this writing, the lion is staying on the boat with Andy. It'll possibly end up being presented to a zoo where it can be with other lions, if it hasn't already, but Andy at least wanted to have some time with it so they can become good friends. Andy - if he can swing it! - the lion may be added to the family menagerie after all. Hopefully, the family menagerie will not be added to the lion (Har Har!)
Anyway, Andy is back to work with the best possible chance of remaining uninterrupted. How many stars, when they say “Gee, I have to be alone because I'm working” have a watch-lion to back them up by consuming uninvited guests? And no, he doesn't have the horse on the boat (yet). Have you ever tried to boat-break a horse?
So now that we've put to bed all those silly rumors about why Andy didn't tour when his brothers did, and now that we're glad he isn't lonely anymore - as for that album and that tour, they're coming, they're coming! And if we know Andy, they'll be worth waiting for!
