The superstar group of today's disco scene, the Bee Gees, are a private, close-knit trio of brothers not given to self-revelation. But when it comes to telling the inside story about the Bee Gees, and their younger brothers Andy Gibb, the non-musical parents of the pop singers are down-right “vocal.”
“Ah, the lies that were printed,” exclaims Hugh Gibb about Andy Gibb's notorious divorce from his young Australian wife. “Things that were never verified, because Andy was advised by all his lawyers to say nothing, which I don't agree with to an extent because keepin' silent is an admission of guilt sometimes. In a criminal case it is.”
“Well,” adds wife Barbara, “it could have been still going on if Andy had opened his mouth. If he said what he wanted to say. I always remember with Dick Katz said when Maurice and Lu were going through their divorce. He said: `Least said, soonest mended.'” “But it wasn't in this case,” Hugh reminds anyone within ear-shot. “It dragged on for nearly two years!”
Mama Gibb also candidly reveals, “Andy never dates. Anybody. Except people he knows like Susie George, Livvy (Olivia Newton-John) and Lee (Lee Kramer). He goes out with them. Or Karen Carpenter. Or Marie (Osmond), but when he's with Marie, Donnie and Debby are there, too. He never goes out with fans. It is wise, because you never know what's said. He's a normal boy. He'd like to go out with girls. it's just that he's a little bit wary.” Any other observations from the parents Gibb? Well, says Barbara, “I'm always very choosey about his girlfriends.” So what mother isn't?
