Battle Lines:

Sisko, Bashir and Kira are forced to leave Kai Opaka on a world where there is eternal life, and eternal war.

Kai Opaka gets Sisko to take her on a trip through the wormhole. Their runabout is shot down by automated defences around a moon. Opaka is killed in the crash and Kira grieves bitterly. Then she, Sisko and Bashir find that they are in the middle of an ugly war between the Ennis and the Nol-Ennis. Kira fires on a Nol when they attack the Ennis encampment. When the attack is over, she is stunned to see the dead seemingly rise. There is a kind of nanotechnology in the atmosphere which repairs cellular damage, no matter how deadly the wound. Opaka is revived by this technology and rejoins the crew. She watches as Kira involves herself in the violence around her, then speaks with her about it. Kira tries to argue that she is not an inherently violent person, but the Kai counsels her to acknowledge her inner violence, so that she can begin to move beyond it. Kira weeps, saying she has known nothing but violence her whole life, and that she is afraid the Prophets won't forgive her. Opaka holds her close, and tells her the Prophets are only waiting for her to forgive herself. Bashir discovers that the technology which revived Opaka will cease to function if the Kai is removed from the planet's atmosphere. He is about to tell Opaka when the Kai pre-empts him by announcing her decision to remain behind and help the warring factions make peace. Opaka tells Kira that it is time for this world to begin its healing, just as Kira was brought here to begin hers.
