THIS KNIGHT'S SUN HAS SET
No more rides for NBC's Knight Rider

It still has not become reality for David Hasselhoff yet that his years of playing Michael Knight on NBC's now cancelled Knight Rider are over. He now sits at his home pondering his future after Knight Rider, the series that made him a superstar, has come to an end. Hasselhoff insists, "I would have done a fifth season of the show without hesitation, but most of the scripts were low quality and we managed to produce an entire season in under five months."
It appears Universal, who produces the show felt production costs for a fifth season would have made the show less profitable. Last year NBC almost balked at the $250,000 it had to pay for a new super pursuit mode for the talking car K.I.T.T. that ended up being a last ditch attempt to save Knight Rider as it slipped further in the ratings. Several of the writers who had made the show a top ten hit for NBC from 1982 until last year did not come back for a fourth season. In an attempt to add more storyline, NBC recruited actor Peter Parros to play the role of Reginald Cornelius III but he did little to stop the freefall.
Hasselhoff and the cast were told by NBC in early November 1985 that once the commitment for the fourth season was done, Knight Rider was being cancelled. With little time left, Hasselhoff approached the writers with an episode idea to bring back the character of Stephanie Mason played by Catherine Hickland who happens to be David Hasselhoff's wife. "Catherine and I approached NBC and told them that we had to have this episode for the series and we managed to get the episode written and made within a four week span." NBC agreed and aired the episode in early January of this year.
The episode was titled "Scent of Roses" and it became the last produced episode on the Knight Rider set. Catherine's character died in the episode and Michael's character appeared to be burnt out. David remarks, " I wanted fans to see what took a toll on Michael over these last few years and that in the end he could always count on his family." Michael drives into the sunset with K.I.T.T. his talking car back to his one true home, the foundation. NBC decided to air "Scent of Roses" before the remaining episodes which disappointed Hasselhoff greatly. He now looks back at the show and hopes one day he will get the chance to be Michael Knight again.
NBC has announced it will air repeats throughout the summer until it is sure what it will do to replace Knight Rider in its schedule for this fall. Apparently this knight's sun has set.
