KNIGHT RIDER 2010
ACT SIX
FADE IN:
EXT. DOWNTOWN STREETS - NIGHT
FOLLOW K.D. careening through the dark, over manholes and grates pouring steam from the inferno down below. Suddenly, she SCREECHES to a brutal halt in the middle of the street. A long moment, then -
Just as suddenly, K.D.'s engine kicks into action, the car cooking down a deserted street before coming to a second, abrupt stop.
INT. K.D. - NIGHT
A worn out Lincoln punches the dash in frustration. Slumps back in the seat.
LINCOLN
Can you find a better way to work out this hostility?
Lincoln's face tightens as he's met with only silence. He tries to start up the car, but the engine refuses to turn over.
LINCOLN
(tight smile)
It's the same damn thing, over and over again. You give orders. I follow them.
Lincoln surreptitiously works a plate free from the dash, under -
LINCOLN
I'm overdue for a change. It feels good to finally be the one in the driver's seat.
Lincoln removes the plate, exposing a colorful weave of plastic wires.
LINCOLN
No offense, K.D. - in the old days, we were on hell of a team - but you're not exactly in any position to command.
K.D. (V.O.)
Why are you being so crue….
Lincoln pulls a handful of colored wires free from the dash, shutting down K.D.'s voice and automatic functions. Lincoln throws the car into first and tears away -
EXT. POWER STATION - NIGHT
Veronica stands in clouds of wind-whipped steam as K.D. pulls up.
VERONICA
(leaning in the window)
You're late.
Lincoln pops the passenger door.
LINCOLN
You don't give an inch, do you?
K.D.'S DIGITIZED POV
From the dash, as Veronica slides into the car, skirt rising up her thigh like an engraved invitation, flashing a black lace garter and a crescent of white flesh.
VERONICA
You said midnight. I hate to be kept waiting.
Lincoln throws Veronica a tired look.
LINCOLN
This isn't a date. Where's your boss?
VERONICA
He hates waiting, too.
A SCHEMATIC OF THE DASHBOARD appears as an inset in the POV.
VERONICA
I offered to stick around and take you to him.
The schematic CLICKS DOWN TO a detail of the wires that Lincoln shredded. The schematics GLOWS bright RED, blinks REPAIR, and the animated wires begin to slowly reweave and reconnect.
EXT. DOWNTOWN STREETS - NIGHT
Owning the road, Lincoln negotiates the darkness.
CUT TO:
EXT. MOTOR POOL - NIGHT
Brady is behind the wheel of his specially built and designed Knight Rider car, a HANDICAPPED STICKER on its bumper. The M.P.'s we saw earlier have no choice but to step back as Brady guns his engine and the vehicle explodes out the Main Gate -
CUT TO:
TIGHT ON LINCOLN
Flashing red and purple neon illuminates his haggard face, as his muscles tighten in barely repressed anguish and fury.
EXT. BIG AL'S ALTERNATE REALITY LOUNGE - NIGHT
Lincoln drives K.D. into the parking lot. A stretch limo is parked diagonally across three spaces.
VERONICA (V.O.)
A word to the wise -
INT. K.D. - NIGHT
Lincoln can't take his eyes off the spot where K.D. died in his arms.
VERONICA
--My boss likes a positive attitude.
LINCOLN
Then why are we meeting here?
VERONICA
Call it a test. What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
Off Lincoln's look -
EXT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT
A burly Chauffeur slides from behind the wheel, steps around and opens the passenger door of the limousine. Ilya steps out in head-to-toe Ralph Lauren. He gives K.D. a quick once-over, fore and aft, smiles pleasantly, then crosses over to -
EXT. K.D. - NIGHT
Strolling with a relaxed gait. Still shellshocked, Lincoln follows Veronica out of the car.
VERONICA
Mr. Pankow, you good and loyal friend, Mr. Dubrovna.
ILYA
My friends call me Ilya.
Ilya grabs and pumps Lincoln's unoffered limp hand.
ILYA
We've had our eye on you for years, Linc.
LINCOLN
My friends call me Mr. Pankow.
ILYA
(pinching Lincoln's cheek, Russian style)
And they say Knight Riders don't have a sense of humor.
LINCOLN
I'm no Knight Rider. But I cover my debts.
ILYA
Not always voluntarily.
(riffing)
Juvenile detention, 1998, Adolescent Reform Corps, 2002, Convicted in a Hacking and Entering scan, 2005. Army enlistment to avoid prosecution, 2006. Quite a record.
LINCOLN
Just don't tell my mother.
ILYA
Always with the jokes. I love it.
K.D.'S DIGITIZED POV - ILYA AND LINCOLN
negotiating. Inset in the POV is the schematic of the wires slowly reweaving, flashing the words: REPAIR IN PROGRESS.
ILYA
Benedict Arnold got his start at West Point, too.
LINCOLN
Yeah, and spent the rest of his life running from both sides.
ILYA
(regretfully)
All he really needed was good management.
BACK TO SCENE
Ilya pulls Lincoln away from the car, arm around his shoulder, conspiratorially.
ILYA
So, tovarich - Why don't I just pop you like I did your girlfriend and take the car?
Lincoln inhales, fighting to keep his feelings in check under the head of Ilya's ingratiatingly sadistic smile.
LINCOLN
Because you want more than the car.
ILYA
Good answer. Maybe we can do business the old-fashioned way, one hand washing the other.
LINCOLN
What do I get for the car?
ILYA
A job - provided you can handle yourself.
LINCOLN
I didn't get to twenty-five by accident.
ILYA
But can you handle another Knight Rider?
Lincoln nods, confidently.
ILYA
Prove it.
LINCOLN
To who? You or Intercrime?
ILYA
(with a hurt look)
There's no such thing as Intercrime. I'm a legitimate businessman.
Lincoln laughs at Ilya's evil flamboyance.
ILYA
I'd like to trust you. I got a Knight Rider car. Now, I want a Knight Rider.
LINCOLN
Dead or alive?
ILYA
If you gotta ask, you're not the man for the job. I want Brady. It's a favor for a friend.
Lincoln thinks for a moment, then turns back to K.D. without a word. He climbs in and starts the car.
ILYA
Just where do you think you're going with my car?
Lincoln opens his window. Indicating the limo -
LINCOLN
You wired for video in that heap?
ILYA
Sure.
LINCOLN
Channel 238. You'll love the show.
Lincoln starts to drive off, with -
ILYA
When you're finished, bring the car to 11 Roscoe Boulevard. It's a warehouse.
LINCOLN
You don't trust me after tonight, we were never meant for each other.
ILYA AND VERONICA
watch K.D. disappear down the street.
ILYA
It's going to hurt me to kill him.

She continues to repair the wires. The screen flashes: REPAIR 95% COMPLETE.

This game of cat-and-mouse is played for all its worth, advantage shifting from Lincoln to Brady then back again. K.D. spins and skids sideways in an oil slick. Brady sees his opening and takes his best shot, opening up with a fender-mounted FLAME THROWER.
The oil slick erupts into FLAMES.

RESUME - EXT. DOWNTOWN STREET - DAY
