Communication Devices

The personal communicator has a case made from duranium. The heart of the communicator is the STA (Subspace Transceiver Assembly). This incorporates a low-power subspace field emitter and an analogue to digital voice encoder. The STA is also used in other devices such as the PADD and tricorder.
Voice inputs are received by a monofilm pickup microphone. All Starfleet communications are encrypted, the voice signals are modified by the encryption assembly. The encryption algorithms used by Starfleet are changed on a random schedule.

Power is provided by the communicator's sarium krellide power cell, which provides enough power for two weeks normal use. Communicators are recharged through EM induction.
Communication between two personal communicators is limited to approximately 500 km, starship's communication systems are able to enhance signals, giving a ground to ship range of approximately 75,000 km.
Communicators require a line of sight. Range will improve if the planet's magnetic field is less than 0.9 gauss or mean geological density is less than 5.56 g/cc.

Security

For security purposes the communicator can identify it's user bioelectrical field and temperature profiles using it's built in dermal sensor array. If another crew member tries to use the communicator without security override authority, the communicator will not activate. During normal situations, security codes are changed every five days. In emergencies the codes change at least once every 24 hours.

Types Of Communicator

Communicator from the Original Series Wrist communicator from The Motion Picture Insignia style communicator from ST:Voyager similar devices used in TNG and DS9

Klingon Communicators

The Klingon Defense Force's combadge is made from a polyduranium casing, layered with baakonite. It is patterned after the particular military division of the wearer.

The unit-unit range of the Klingon communicator is 960 km. The translatioon library is very limited, but operates at approx. 130-150% faster than a Starfleet combadge's.

The power cell is a minature sintered thermium cell, and can last for up to 4.65 weeks (continuous us).

Ferengi Translator Implant

The Ferengi Translator Implant is a small Universal Translator that is designed to make negotiations and trading easier for the money-crazed Ferengi.

The implant has no RF or subspace transmission functions. The unit is 2.3 by 2.54 cm and runs on a sarium krellide cell (for up to 2 weeks at a time). Electro-chemical impulses from muscles in the ear control the device's activation.

The implant is prone to EM interference, data drop-outs and intermittent operation during illness of user.

The unit contains 756 translation libraries, and is easily updatable.

Romulan Communicators

The Romulan communicator is in the form of two-headed eagle symbol of the Romulan Star Empire. The Romulan communicator has no dermal sensor, and cannot be turned off after initiation of the device.
The casing is carved from s'ephelnium-calmecite (an alloy known for it's resistab=nce to fracture).

No units have been aquired for analysis as of yet.

Bajoran Communicators

The Bajoran combadge is worn by civilians and the Bajoran Militia. It is a hybrid of Starfleet and Bajoran technology, and takes the form of the Bajoran Militia symbol. The Bajoran communicator usually operates on Starfleet frquencies, using Starfleet data transmission protocol.

The casing is made from hafnium beritite. The Universal Translator only has 198 translation libraries (compared to 253 in a Starfleet Communicator) but real-time translation calculations occur 155% faster.
