The
U.S.S. Defiant is the prototype for the Defiant-class starship. The second starship
to bear the name U.S.S. Defiant. She is officially classified as an escort vessel,
but she began her development in 2366 as a small, highly-powered, heavily-armed
starship intended to defend the Federation against the Borg. She was the first of what was supposed to be a
new Federation battle fleet. Starfleet abandoned the project when the Borg threat became less urgent and after some design
flaws turned up during her shakedown cruise. In 2371, the Defiant was assigned
to Deep Space 9 to help counter the threat posed by the Dominion threat. She was equipped with a cloaking
device on loan from the Romulans. The ship has a minimal crew accommodations
and a small sickbay, and no provision for families. She also carries at least
two shuttlecrafts. The Defiant was the ship that mined the Bajoran Wormhole.
