DARLINGTON IS A PERPLEXING TRACK. YOU CAN'T LET YOUR GUARD DOWN FOR EVEN A SPLIT SECOND OR YOU WILL GET YOUR OWN "DARLINGTON STRIPE." THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE IS TO TRY TO TAKE IT A LITTLE EASIER THAN YOU THINK YOU NEED TO AND LET OTHER PEOPLE MAKE THE MISTAKES. THE SETUP BELOW IS FAST, BUT NO SETUP IS FAST WHEN ALL YOUR SHEET METAL IS IN THE BACK END OF A CLEAN-UP TRUCK. BE SMART AND FINISH AND YOU WILL PROBABLY BE SURPRISED AT HOW WELL YOU FINISH.
TURNS 1 AND 2 ARE WIDER AND FASTER THAN TURNS 3 AND 4 SO BEWARE OF THE DIFFERENCE AND ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHERE YOU ARE ON THE TRACK.
A GOOD LAP AT DARLINGTON STARTS OUT NEAR THE WALL AT THE S/F LINE. AS YOU GET NEAR TURN 1, LIFT OFF THE GAS AND GENTLY TAP THE BRAKES TO GET THE CAR SETTLED FOR THE CORNER. 170-175 IS A GOOD TARGET SPED RANGE FOR GETTING INTO TURN 1. ENTER TURN 1 ALLTHE WAY AT THE BOTTOM ON THE WHITE LINE AND THEN LET THE CAR SLIDE UP TOWARDS THE WALL. THE "DARLINGTON SLIDE" TAKES SOME GUTS BUT IT IS THE FASTEST WAY THROUGH THE CORNERS. THE CAR IS ALMOST ALWAYS LOOSE AT DARLINGTON, SO BE CAREFUL NOT TO TURN THE CAR INTO THE APRON IN THE CORNERS.
EXIT TURN 2 AND LET THE CAR EASE BACK OUT AS CLOSE TO THE WALL AS YOU CAN GET TO SETUP FOR TURN 3. YOU'LL BE ON THE BRAKES PRETTY GOOD TO GET THE CAR SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 150-158 TO ENTER TURN 3. ANY FASTER THAN THAT AND YOU'LL GO STRAIGHT UP INTO THE WALL, SO BE CAREFUL. ONCE YOU GET THE CAR SETTLED IN TURN 3, THE CAR IS ACTUALLY PRETTY EASY TO DRIVE THROUGH TURN 4. GET BACK ON THE GAS AND GET OUT NEAR THE WALL TO SET UP YOUR NEXT LAP.
