POCONO IS, IN MY OPINION, THE MOST UNIQUE TRACK ON THE WINSTON CUP SCHEDULE. IT'S OFF-BEAT TRIANGULAR DESIGN MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO SET-UP FOR. POCONO HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS: "PART SUPERSPEEDWAY, PART SHORT TRACK, AND PART ROAD COURSE." THAT'S A PRETTY ACCURATE DESCRIPTION.
AS FAR AS DRIVING THE TRACK, START OUT NEAR THE WALL ON THE FRONT STRAIGHTAWAY AND THEN BRAKE FAIRLY HARD ABOUT THE 250 MARK GOING INTO TURN 1. DOWNSHIFT TO THIRD GEAR AND EASE THE CAR DOWN TO THE BOTTOM AND SLOW TO ABOUT 140-145. ONCE YOU GET THE CAR SOLIDLY UNDERNEATH YOU, GET BACK ON THE GAS AND SHIFT BACK TO FOURTH AND LET THE CAR DRIFT OUT TO THE WALL.
TURN 2 IS A LOT FASTER THAN TURN ONE AND YOU CAN USUALLY TAKE IT SOMEWHERE NEAR 175 OR SO WHEN THE TIRES GET SOME HEAT IN THEM. DRIVE THE CAR ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE CURBING AND EASE OFF THE GAS UNTIL YOU GET THE CAR SETTLED DOWN. THEN GET BACK ON THE GAS AND HEAD BACK OUT TO THE WALL.
TURN 3 IS THE HARDEST TURN FOR MOST EVERYONE. IT IS ALSO THE MOST IMPORTANT. IF YOU GET OFF OF TURN 3 WELL YOU CAN REALLY GET A RUN ON THE GUY IN FRONT OF YOU AS YOU GO DOWN THE LONG FRONTSTRETCH. IF YOU GET THE CAR OUT OF SHAPE COMING OUT OF TURN 3, YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO TUCK IN BEHIND THE GUY IN FRONT AND TRY TO DRAFT ALL THE WAY.
AS YOU COME INTO TURN 3 GET ON THE BRAKES FIRMLY AND SHIFT DOWN TO THIRD GEAR. TRY TO KEEP THE CAR OUT ABOUT A HALF-GROOVE HIGHER THAN THE BOTTOM UNTIL YOU REACH THE APEX OF THE TURN. TRY TO KEEP THE SPEED AROUND 140 OR SO GOING THROUGH THE TURN. THEN TURN THE CAR DOWN TO THE BOTTOM AND HEAD FOR THE S/F LINE.
