The Challenge From Beyond 2000 Who's Who

Offered for the benefit of writers and readers alike, this should help make sense of the many, many characters to appear in the story. I will try to keep this updated. If anyone spots something I've gotten wrong or left out, please inform me of it at <chaucerwatch23@yahoo.com>.

Characters, in order of appearance (with first appearance in the story in parentheses):

LEE BURROUGHS--(Prologue) Former BATF agent, and former DG "Agent William." Other cell members killed in Lee's last mission, during which Lee read a book (probably the 13th volume of *Revelations of Glaaki*) which allowed an alien god-thing (almost certainly Y'golonac) to possess his mind and body. Lee defeated the possessor by somehow shattering his own mind into a not-always-cooperative confederation of different personalities, which often take control of various parts of the body. Lee's personalities so far are as follows:

*Red Thomas--(Prologue) "a nasty son of a bitch, but damn good in a fight"; Thomas has become an ally of the Thing, starting in Ch7, passing the point of no return in Ch10.

*Edgar-- (Prologue) protective, loves Cordelia, usually controls Lee's right hand.

*Cordelia--(Prologue) nervous, skittish, loves Edgar, usually controls the left hand.

*Mycroft--(Ch1) hyper-observant, analytical, rational, problem-solving; also pedantic, fussy, and mysogynistic (possibly gynophobic).

*Diana--(Ch1) knowledgable about fashion.

*Banner--(Ch6) another analytical personality, perhaps a scientist to Mycroft's detective (thanks Nick, for that insight)

*Fallon and Jesse--(Ch6) control Lee's legs (at least sometimes).

The THING--(Prologue) Almost certainly Y'golonac (aka the Bloated One, aka the Corpse God), it took over Lee's mind and body through a memetic virus, and desires to do so again. It has seduced Red Thomas, and in Ch10 manages to briefly but fully re-possess Lee.

DOC--(Prologue) Real name not yet revealed. Psychiatrist who works as a Friendly for Delta Green; since he knows about the Mythos, he can offer psychiatric support that normal doctors cannot. Protective of his patients. Has reddish dog hairs on his coat, and a collection of toys, colored glass, crystals, and other knick-knacks that seem to be symbolic of his inner state--Mycroft uses the positioning of these items to analyze the analyst (Ch1). Doc is at first somewhat hostile toward "Ms. Verde"--reasons for this may be deduced from Doc's appearance in Chapter 6 of *Angel*. Doc is compromised to MJ-12, and there is a strong suggestion that he is sanctioned (Ch6), although who is going to kill him (and whether they will succeed--remember that Doc is ex-military, ex-CIA, and ex-DG Agent) is not indicated.

Agents WALTER and WEI--(Prologue) Lee's former partners, dead and buried under a basement floor.

BOBBI PEEL--(Ch1) aka Roberta Peel, aka Robert Peel, aka Ms. Verde. Formerly a mathematician, Robert had a traumatic encounter with the Mythos and dealt with it by "flipping"; he is now psychologically (and physically??? Lepus seems to think so in Ch11, but it seems unlikely) a hip woman with flashy fashion sense and poor math skills, who bops to Britney Spears music (Ch8) and jokes about not being able to parallel park. Bobbi's background before this change has not yet been explored. She cares about Lee, doesn't trust Harvey, and hates Lepus.

The LIBRARY POLICE--(Ch1) Described as a special DG cell that deal with artifacts, posing as "representatives of a civilian team of consultants to law enforcement; consulting with psychics and remote viewers and crime-scene dowsers." This team consists of Lee, Bobbi, and Harvey. However, this is later revealed to have been a ruse on Harvey's part, and the exact purpose for the Library Police team is not yet clear.

ADOLPH LEPUS--(Ch2) See *Delta Green* and *Rules of Engagement* for description and background. In this story, Lepus likes Johnny Cash and gets mistaken for Tommy Lee Jones a lot. He also carries a huge experimental raygun with multiple settings (Ch8), and enjoys killing tourists who take pictures of him (Ch5). He has become an unexpected ally of the Library Police, and knows Harvey (as George) from way back (Ch8).

SEAN GRESHAM--(Ch2) An MJ-12 tech guy who works for Lepus. (May be the man in the gray flannel suit at the end of Ch3.)

ZHEN-YUE--(Ch2) An Asian woman also called "Chaste Moon" (her name translated into English?). She owns Ralphie and is apparently a cold-blooded killer. She seems to wear a lot of perfume, although this may just be Mycroft's gynophobia kicking in (Ch11).

RALPHIE--(Ch2) An attack-trained Doberman (probably), owned by Zhen-Yue. Once bit Lepus by accident (Lepus was covered with blood).

PARNELL WARREN HARDIGAN--(Ch3) DG Friendly, works in the library at Miskatonic University. Bald, academic type. He is taken captive by Torsten while on a flight to Argentina, where he was taking "The Rite." (Chs5&7) Although he at first seemed to be a typically sensitive Lovecraftian protagonist, he has held up remarkably well, after being beaten and threatened with death numerous times. He is presently imprisoned with his erstwhile kidnapper, Torsten, in a secret base in Antarctica.

A--(Ch3) Alphonse? Alzis? Described as "a wizened, vicious skeleton of a man," A does not seem to fit the description of either of these man, unless Alphonse lost a lot of weight after being shot in *Rules of Engagement*, which is certainly possible. An aside by "Joseph" in Ch4 suggests that this is the case, and that A's flowery mode of speech is simply a result of Hardigan's writing style.

HARVEY NASH--(Ch4) Works with DG, but not clear if he works *for* DG. Tobacco addict, "coarse, dry skin," "morbidly cold lungs." Later writers have added that Harvey doesn't like bright lights, doesn't sweat, has "cool, dry, snakelike skin" (Ch6), has an "overpowering stench" (at least to Robert Hubert's discriminating nose, Ch7), carries a Desert Eagle, and used to be known as George (Ch8). He is apparently quite familiar with Joseph Camp, Adolph Lepus, and Robert Hubert, and does not hesitate to kill or use torture (although he says he doesn't like to). Although the leader of the Library Police, he is not trusted by Bobbi or Lee. He also seems to be working with "The Order," which might be the Order of the Sword of Saint Jerome, or might not. (Or he could have been lying to Joseph.)

JOSEPH--(Ch4) Almost certainly Joseph Camp (and A, above), although you never can tell. (See *Delta Green*, *Rules of Engagement*, and other sources for descriptions.) Seems to be manipulating the pieces to get the Library Police and Hardigan where he wants them, to pull of some sort of trump over MJ-12. Also working to obtain "future services" from "The Order."

GACY and the BROTHERHOOD OF MOUTHS--(Ch4) Gacy (an alias) is a stupid scumbag who enjoys torturing young girls and pregnant women to death, as part of his worship in the Brotherhood of Mouths, which is apparently an Y'golonac cult. Another Brother, mentioned in passing, calls himself Manson, and Harvey uses the name Lucas to get inside Gacy's home, so any others who might turn up should follow the convention of naming themselves after serial killers. The Brotherhood wants to kill Robert Hubert, for reasons not yet clear. However, Harvey kills all of them, including Gacy. (Or at least he believes he has.)

TWO FAT TOURISTS--(Ch5) Two women, possibly sisters, who Lepus kills because they take a picture of him.

MARTIN ARNOLD--(Ch5) A 52-year-old ex-roadie who listens to Judas Priest to wake up in the morning. Lost his job for having sex with a minor. Burnt out on drugs and drink, he now gets regular visits from Jim Morrison and Elvis Presley--how much of this is real and how much in his addled mind is unclear. Morrison pays him $1000 a week to check a statue of Mary in St. Paul's Cathedral for hands on the palms--which eventually do appear.

JIM MORRISON--(Ch5) aka The Lizard King, he pays Martin Arnold to watch for a manifestation of Y'golonac. He seems worried about it.

MARIAH--(Ch5) A beautiful United Airlines stewardess, brutally murdered by Torsten as a demonstration.

TORSTEN--(Ch5) Leader (and sole survivor) of the hijack team that takes Hardigan's plane. Tall, "nearly skinny," late 20s, short black hair and a single eyebrow across his forehead. Native language is German. Casually murderous, and doesn't seem terribly bright. In Ch11 he is revealed to be a Karotechia agent at the rank of Bauer.

CARSTEN--(Ch5) Another hijacker, killed in Ch9.

The AIRLINER PASSENGERS and CREW--(Ch5) The pilot and copilot are mysteriously killed, reduced in moments to skeletons and rags. The other passengers are taken to the Antarctic Base by Jacoby's men (Ch10) and fall prey to the creature there (Ch11). Whether any survive is unknown.

ROBERT HUBERT--(Ch7) See *Delta Green*, *Rules of Engagement*, *The Fate*, and other sources for description. Hubert had some sort of hold over Harvey, which Harvey repaid by wiping out the Brotherhood of Mouths. Hubert also arranged to have Hardigan's plane hijacked and somehow transported to Antarctica.

RAMONA--(Ch8) The Lord of Wounds, in the Fate, Ramona is a powerful sorceress. She is sexually attracted to Alzis, and serving him seems to be her only joy. She is apparently (though not certainly) killed in battle with the Y'golonac-possessed Lee in Ch10.

STEPHEN ALZIS--(Ch8) See *Delta Green*, *The Fate*, and other sources for full description. Alzis is apparently in some sort of political power struggle with Hubert, and sends Ramona to attack the Library Police and bring back the head of one of the agents (it is not clear who; all three have potentially interesting things in their heads).

Ramona's THINGIE--(Ch8) The monster Ramona summons, "big as a bear, with skin both fur and scales," claws, the works. It appears out of a flash, so might be a Dimensional Shambler. Lepus kills it with the Raygun.

BOSWELL--(Ch9) A worker out of McMurdo Base in the Antarctic--it is never clear whether he is civilian or military, but he readily takes orders from Jacoby. Witnesses the crash-landing of the hijacked-and-transported 747, and the deaths of the hijackers.

The "CAVALRY"--(Ch9) Arctic-camoflaged (with no insignia) commando troops, who kill the hijackers and use odd weapons (which seem to have some sort of bad effect on their users) to melt the ice and dispose of the bodies and the 747 (Ch11). Divided into Blue Team and Red Team (Ch10), they travel in a Chinook helicopter and a Hercules transport plane.

JACOBY--(Ch10) Leader of "the Cavalry." Boswell considers Jacoby his superior officer; Torsten recognizes him as his employer. He is not given a name until Ch11.

WINO--(Ch10) A guy that gets caught in the crossfire of the fight between Ramona and Y'golonac. Lepus executes him.

The ANTARCTIC BASE CREATURE--(Ch11) Something barely described, that "boil[s] up out of the tunnel" and rips apart the airliner passengers. A shoggoth?

AXL GOTTERDAMMURUNG--(Ch11) See http://www.delta-green.com/humor/s8_bish.html for the inital description of this psychopath. A Bischof for the Karotechia, Axl is assigned to the Antarctic Base, although in what capacity is not yet clear.
