Episode 1: Back to the Future

Well, you asked for comments...and your story is wonderful. (I retrieved it from your website before the emails came through.) I really enjoyed it so far, and am looking forward to the conclusion of this arc. It rings true of L&C without being too campy...and has enough sci-fi to keep me happy. I also liked that the female was named Lori (altho' I kept wondering if she was a mermaid for the first few paragraphs :) ...(I can't wait for your next installment...)

Please keep up the good work. It is appreciated!

I'm a avid Folc and I just read your 1st edition of season five "Back to the Future". What a story! I was so impressed with the format, the pictures, and especially the writing. I particularily liked the continuity of dialogue. You (or more specifically your writer Barbara) really nailed HG Wells, and the clever reparte between Lois & Clark. You have truly captured the essence of Lois & Clark and the things I loved most about the series. I've read other season five editions, and while I did enjoy their stories, your issue is really a fifth season set to words. So far the other season five episodes have been mearly clever fan fiction, but I could really imagine your efforts put to screen. Please continue the good work and consider me a grateful fan! And definately keep up the photo inserts. Even if they are "old" footage, they ad so much to the story.

Just read the first part of the first ep and just wanted to say "thank you" for your efforts.

Whatever you do, don't stop.

I'm loving it! *This* is more like what I expected/hoped for in a fan-produced L&C continuation! The characters were in character! The author made full use of the fanfic format to give us characters' thoughts and feelings. The A-plot in 2079 was meted out in tantalizing doses, giving us rich characters with emotions and pasts that made me care about what happens to them -- and it was intriguing! I was sure it wasn't Lois' Clark with Lori (though I thought it might be Lori Lemar!), but I definitely wanted to find out how Lori had her own Clark Kent Superman!

And the B-Plot had the things that TCFWAY was missing! We learned something about Lois' thoughts and feelings on having a baby:

>> Lois had never felt very comfortable around babies. Somehow, the cute little creatures that would smile and coo in other people's arms, would immediately begin to wail if she were to pick them up. So, she had made it a point to just avoid them. Since children were not something that had fit into Lois Lane's pursuit of a Pulitzer, this had seemed like a good plan. And it had worked just fine until she met Clark. <<

This is dead-on Lois Lane! Her previous attitude towards and experiences with babies rings completely true, and the change in that attitude being caused by falling in love with Clark. We even get Lois struggling with this baby, phrased in perfect Lois Lane terms:

>> Holding the screaming infant, she was at a complete loss of what to do. Could she be the same woman allowed an interview with the President of the United States? The same woman who had earned three Kerth awards? <<

We got Martha, in spades! *This* was the Martha missing from TCFWAY! Having heart-to-hearts with Lois, comforting, supportive, and reassuring without taking over or being pushy -- and we got the parallel between Martha and Jonathan finding Clark, and Lois and Clark being "given" this baby! Yes!

>> "Lois, you've had a baby just dropped in your laps. Of course there will need to be adjustments. We weren't exactly expecting Clark, either. For the first few weeks, I thought I must be the dumbest woman in the world. Everything was new to me. I made every mistake possible." Placing her hand on Lois' arms, she grinned. "How do you think I knew to warn you about the diaper incident. Clark got Jonathan and I more than once." <<

And there was humor!

>> "No, honey," she grinned, unable to help herself. "I think you've been baptized now." <<

What's more, Barb understands babies! She gets it, in a way that the author of TCFWAY just didn't, and it made this baby real! As Martha said:

>> "Lois, taking care of a baby's not easy. It's a 24 hour a day job." <<

Yay, Martha! On behalf of mothers everywhere, thank you Barb!

And I was amused to read this following passage, in light of our conversation about the use of prose to *describe* something rather than simply relate it:

>> Through all of the commotion, the baby finally decided it was past time for breakfast, and time to let his dissatisfaction with the situation be known. What had started earlier as a soft cry, could now most likely be heard throughout Metropolis. <<

This is superior writing talent, IMO, and it makes all the difference! I can't wait for the rest of the story!

I really liked this episode. I subscribed to one of the other season fives and thought it wasn't very good. Yours actually seems to go somewhere. The characters are believable and true to the show so far. The story is interesting and well written, with the intercutting between the time periods done well. TUFS bombed there. It was an entertaining read and I look forward to the story's resolution, making the piece a success in my opinion. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Ana Lanes (AnaLanes@aol.com), 11 November:

Very creative. I hated the end of the season 4, with that baby... I don't think Clark and Lois' baby should just appear from somewhere, so for get rid of that baby I have to give you guys a 10!!!
The time travelling thing was fine, but travel to the future and go back to the past a lot of time is confusing and a little boring sometimes.
