It's just your average love story. You know, girl meets girl, girl turns into boy, father turns into giant panda, other girl hates boy/girl on sight... Okay, so it's NOT your average love story. It's crazy. It's bizarre. It's got more twists that a Turkish Knot. And we all love it. So, I present to you in all its wacky glory, my site in honor of this miraculous feat of storytelling.
RANMA SAOTOME:
Ranma Saotome and his father Genma made a promise to Ranma's mom that Ranma would become "man among men," or else they would be forced to commit ritual suicide. With this thought in mind, Genma took Ranma from home at an early age to go on a long training mission to China- despite the fact that neither spoke a word of Chinese. It was this that led them to the Cursed Training Ground of Jusenkyo, where there were hundreds of little pools, each one bearing the curse that whoever fell in would turn into the last thing that drowned there. And I bet you can guess what happened next. So, I bring you..
RANMA-CHAN???
So now, Ranma has a little problem on his hands. When splashed with cold water, he becomes a she (and an admirably built she, too!) Hot water can reverse the effects, but only till s/he gets splashed again. This has caused him a world of trouble. For instance, it was in this state that Ranma first met Shampoo...
SHAMPOO:
Shampoo is not exactly your average girl, either. She speaks in a Chinese accent, rides her bicycle like a bat out of hell, and turns into a kitty when splashed with cold water.
Born and raised in an Amazon village in China, Shampoo has been ingrained with hundreds of years Tradition. A Tradition that says the worst, most humiliating, unspeakable thing to happen to someone from their village is to be bested by an outsider. Especially outsider females. Too bad no one explained this to Ranma, who thought that s/he'd have a little snack- Shampoo's first-prize banquet, in fact. Shampoo is more than a little miffed, since she had just won the greatest fighting honor in her village. (Considering that their village is Amazon, this is a very big deal honor.) And here's some little outsider girl snarfing down her prize. Shampoo is more than miffed, she's ticked.
And then Ranma makes the mistake of challenging her for the food... Whoops. S/he wins, of course. Now Shampoo is beyond ticked. She's homicidal. She gives Ranma the Kiss of Death, a promise to track to the ends of the earth and kill. And she does chase her/him to the ends of the earth, all the way from China to Japan, in fact. On foot.
Then Ranma ends up beating her in his/her male half. And this is where we discover the loophole to Shampoo's tribal law. You see, if a male outsider beats one of them, instead of killing them, they marry them. So Ranma got kissed, but it wasn't exactly the kiss of death... Or was it? Introducing....
AKANE TENDO:
Akane Tendo is the daughter of Genma's oldest friend and fellow Happosai survivor Soun Tendo. The two made a pact before either Akane or Ranma were born that if the two should have children (of the opposite sex,) that they would engage the two of them so that the Tendo Family Dojo of Indescriminate Grappling will continue on in both of their family's. It's this dojo that Akane has trained in all her life, with, ah, interesting results. ("See how this joint is twisted around all backwards? That's Akane's touch.")
When Genma and Ranma first arrive, it's pouring rain outside. Soun flips when he sees a large panda and a red haired girl standing on his doorstep, but eventually the whole story comes out. Now Soun has three daughters, Akane, Nabiki, and Katsumi. However, the other two ganged up on her and suggested that Akane be made Ranma's fiancee, since Akane hates boys and Ranma is, technically, only half male.
To all appearences the two hate eachother from the start. ("I didn't ask for this!") But this doesn't explain why the two of them occasionally act friendly to each other- or the fact that they both become extremely jealous if they see the other with someone else, (once again, opposite sex only.) Especially Akane. Which is why she and Shampoo instantaneously HATE eachother. And Akane usually takes this out equally on Ranma, for being "such a pervert!" This is not all that easy on Ranma, because Akane is no weakling.
NABIKI TENDO:
Nabiki is the older of Akane's two sisters, and is a complete con artist. She sees an oppotunity to turn a buck in every situation, including that of her sister's luckless fiancee. (Such as selling Girl-type Ranma hot water when Shampoo is chasing her, bent on homicide. "Girl-type Ranma, you I kill!!") And then of course, there's the photo incident...
KASUMI TENDO:
Kasumi is the oldest of Akane's sisters. She's a sweet, kind, motherly person who serves in the stead of her deceased mother. (She's not a whole lot unlike Belldandy...) She also is a bit oblivious to all the strangeness that goes on in her home day-to-day.
SOUN TENDO:
Soun Tendo is Genma's friend since childhood and fellow survivor of Happosai's training. However, the said training left him a nervous wreck, who will break into tears at the slightest provacation. Is completely and utterly stumped by the fact that his daughter and her fiancee seem to get along so badly. Has a gift for barging in when Ranma and Akane show the slightest sign of romance. Spends most of his time playing shougi with Genma.
GENMA SAOTOME:
Ranma's father, who will talk at length about honour and duty, but tends to use these as excuses. Is actually a bit of a swindler and a cheapskate, not to mention a bit cowardly. When the world gets to be too much for him to handle, he has a tendancy to turn himself into a panda and play with his ball.
Due to the fact that in panda form, he can't speak, people (i.e. Ranma) often dump cold water on him to make him shut-up. He attempts to remedy this situation with little signs, which he seems to pull out of thin air.
As I mentioned before, Genma has a swindling streak. One particular instance that comes to mind is that of Ranma's childhood friend, Ukyo.
UKYO KUONJI:
Ukyo was a friend of Ranma's dating way back to his training journey. However, as children, Ranma was never aware of the fact that Ukyo was a girl. However, Genma was very much aware of this, and made an agreement with Ukyo's father. The two children would be engaged, and the Kuonji okonomiyaki cart would be the dowry. However, when Genma and Ranma rode off into the sunset, it seems Genma 'forgot' one thing: Ukyo.
Ukyo declared that she would have revenge, and spent "seven years practicing the art of okonomiyaki making against the raging seas!" And several years later, she appeared in Ranma's life again, pissed off and ready to fight. The two duke it out for awhile, until Ranma remarks that a: Ukyo was actually pretty cute, and b: he had never been told about the engagement. Ukyo's wrath was assuaged, not so much by Ranma's declared innocence, as by the remark that she was cute. From then on, she was Ranma's "cute" fiancee, which made Akane the "uncute" even more livid than ever.
NODOKA SAOTOME:
Nodoka is Ranma's fairly ditzy mother, who is just about as obsessive about honor as Genma. Due to the promise that Genma made before he took Ranma off on his training mission, if they can't prove that Ranma has become a man amoung men, Nodoka will make them commit seppuku. Due to the fact that Ranma is now only half a man, they are not particularlly eager to see her. When Nodoka comes to visit, Ranma's girl half becomes Ranko, Akane's cousin, and Genma becomes her pet panda.
RYUU KUMON:
Ryuu Kumon is some guy who tried to convince Nodoka that he was Ranma so that she would give him the Umisen-ken Scroll. NOT a nice guy, he blames Genma for the death of his father and the destruction of the Kumon school of martial arts.
KINNOSUKE KASHA-OU:
Kinnosuke is master of the 'martial art' of getting someone else to pay for everything. Nabiki once actually duked it out with him over who got to pay the bill. Somewhere along the line they got a sense of, well, affection for eachother. Two con artists, it was a match made in heaven... He also is a ventriloquist, and has a really kawaii butler hand puppet.
HAPPOSAI:
Happosai is Genma and Soun's sensai, who is a complete pervert. The epitomy of dirty old men, Happosai is constantly stealing girl's underwear and jumping up on them. The source of his power are his "silky treasures." Don't underestimate him, though. The wrath of Happosai is truly a frightening thing to behold!!
RAKKYOSAI:
Happosai's old friend from his youth. He has a very strange method of painting and is also a complete pervert. When splashed with cold water he turns into a little boy, so for a long time nobody caught on.
NATSUME AND KURUMI:
A couple of sisters who turned up on the Tendo family doorstep, claiming to be Soun's daughters. Kurumi spends most of her time eating, but Natsume (the mastermind of the whole thing,) is after the Tendo Family Training Hall.
DR. TOFU:
The local doctor, who's head over heels for Kasumi. He's generally a very good doctor, but whenever he's around Kasumi, his glasses fog up until he's practically blind, and he starts acting really goofy.
KIN ONO:
Dr. Tofu's mother, carries around her dead husbands shrine on her back, and has a weird hips obsession. Is extremely eager for her son to get married and have lots of children.
RYOGA HIBIKI:
The original lost boy with fists of steel and a heart of glass. He's Ranma's equal when it comes to fighting, and his weapon of choice is a lead umbrella. Unfortunatly, he has two major setbacks, one: he has the world's worst sense of direction, and two: he turns into a very cute little black pig when splashed with cold water. He REALLY has it in for Ranma, first because Ranma was the one who knocked him into Jusenkyo, secondly because Ranma keeps interrupting when Ryoga is about to confess his love to Akane, (who he's completely devoted to ever since Akane kissed him in his pig form, her pet pig P-chan.) However, he's also in love with Akari Unryu, which causes him a great deal of distress. He's also fairly inobservant, and will fall for any bizzare costume Ranma can think up.
AKARI UNRYU:
A very sweet, pretty girl, Akari loves pigs. She fell in love with Ryoga when he beat her sumo pig (no mean feat, that thing is huge!! Akari usually rides around on its back!) Her grandfather told her to marry whoever beat her pig, but Akari loves Ryoga for his own sake, (the fact that he turns into a pig is actually a BONUS!) Since Ryoga gets lost all the time, he and Akari are pen-pals. When they get a chance, thou gh, they go out with eachother.
AKARI'S GRANDFATHER:
An ancient, frail old man who lies on his futon all the time (which moves around somehow, maybe he's telekinetic! :) He told Akari to marry a man who was strong enough to beat Katsunishiki (the sumo pig) and to do it before he dies.
DAISUKE AND HIROSHI:
A couple of Ranma's friends from school. Both have crushes on Akane, and don't understand why Ranma doesn't take advantae of the fact that they're engaged. They also like Ranma's female half, but since they know who s/he is, they keep it at eye candy level.
TATEWAKI KUNO:
Kuno is a romantic (ie perver t ) who runs around spouting bizzare poetry. "The Blue Thunder" of Fuurinken High, he's the captain of the Kendo Club and is completely in love with both Akane and 'the pigtailed girl.' He is Ranma's sempai, and while he hates Ranma's male half he worships his female half. (He is unbelievably clueless, no matter what he doesn't catch on that they're the same person.) He's convinced that Ranma is out to keep him from his two true loves.
KODACHI KUNO:
Kodachi is Kuno's twisted sister. She is a Martial Arts Rythmic Gymnastics champion, and plats very, very dirty. She uses paralysis gas, poison, mallets... you get the idea. She calls herself "The Black Rose" and uses black roses as her signature. She's in love with Ranma's male half, and is convinced that the female Ranma is trying to keep her from him.
KUNO-KOCHO
The Principle of Fuurinken High, also Tatewaki and Kodachi's father. He has a Hawaiian obsession, and constantly dresses like a Hawaiian tourist, even though he's back in Japan. Has a miniature palm tree growing on top of his head, and runs around trying to cut his student's hair.
SASUKE SARAGAKURE:
The loyal retainer of the Kuno family, Sasuke is treated like a slave by Tatewaki and his sister. He does all of Kuno's dirty work, but Kadachi generally does her own. (And far more effectively than Sasuke does...)
MARIKO KONJYOU:
A Martial Arts Cheerleader who has it BAD for Kuno. She always calls out the letters of wharever she wants to say. Challenged Girl-type Ranma to a Martial Arts Cheerleading Compitition over who got to date Kuno.
ASUKA SAGINOMIYA:
Kodachi's childhood rival, she and Kodachi are in a contest over who can get the best and cutest boyfriend. She loves being elegant, and uses white lilys as her signature.
COLOGNE:
Shampoo's greatgrandmother, the matriarch of the Amazon village back in China. She is 150 years old and knows lots of special Amazon fighting techniques. She runs the Nekohanten, and came to Japan to preserve the family honor and make Ranma marry Shampoo, (whether he likes it or not!) She uses her staff as a pogo stick.
MOUSSE:
Ranma's rival who is hopelessly in love with Shampoo (who does NOT return his affection!) He turns into a duck in cold water named Muu-muu-chan, and is completely blind without his glasses.
PINK AND RINK:
Two twin sisters from China, they both are out to get Shampoo. One poisons with plants, and the other heals. When they were little, one poisoned Shampoo, and the other saved her. But Shampoo beat up her savior, and now they both hate her.
RINRIN AND RANRAN:
Another set of twin sisters, except these are from Shampoo's village, and are her 'sisters.' They came to help get Ranma to marry Shampoo, but ended up staying and working at the Nekohanten.
TSUBASA KURENAI:
A strange girl who likes to chase pretty girls. Ukyo wqas her first love, followed by Ranma-chan, then Akane... She is also a mistress of disguise. She can dress up as anything, a post box, a tree, a statue... But her favorite disguise is a girl! Yes, she is a he (too bad, neh? That would have been interesting!) and he's straight, but just loves crossdressing.
KONATSU:
Another crossdresser, only this one actually thinks that he IS a girl (hmmm... Can you say transexual lesbian? I knew you could! :) He also likes to chase cute girls, especially Ukyo!
HAYATO MYOUJIN:
The local takoyaki boy and Ukyo's rival. Ukyo got in a fight with him when she was ten. She won, and Hayato's punishment has been to wear a tako mask ever since.
BAKUCHI OU KING:
The gambling king, he looks like the king off a deck of cards. Likes to gamble with children. Won the Tendo Dojo from Ranma when he was little, but when he came back to collect his winnings, Ranma and Ukyo beat him up!
HINAKO NINOMIYA:
Ranma and Akane's teacher. She can suck the fighting energy right out of a person. Without this energy, though, she reverts into a littl girl. Looks very sexy when she's in her adult form, and all the male students (except Ranma) want to date her. SHE wants to marry Soun, though.
HIKARU GOSENKUGI:
A creepy little Shinto priest in training, Hikaru never fights via the direct approach. Very sneaky, very underhanded. In love with Akane.
MIKADO SANZENIN:
Aka: Mikado the Molester. Ice-skater extraordinaire, master of kakutou skating. Has kissed 1,000 girls. Gave Ranma-chan her first kiss, (a very unwanted one, at that!)
AZUSA SHIRATORI:
Azusa is Mikado's skating partner. She's sickeningly cute, overly violent, and a kleptomaniac. She collects 'cute' things, (including fish sausages!) and gives them French names. The trouble starts when she decides P-chan is cute, steals him, and names him Charlotte.
JUSENKYO GUIDE:
He works at Jusenkyo, telling everybody about the different stories behind each of the pools... After they fall in. But somehow he can never find the magickal Naniichuan, or Spring of the Drowned Man.
PLUM:
The Jusenkyo guide's daughter, who travelled all the way to Japan by herself when her father got kidnapped by Saffron. Very little, very cute. Actually managed to make her way all the way to the Tendo Dojo to get help while being chased by two of Saffrons followers.
SAFFRON:
A real brat of a prince, and the leader of the Pheonix People. Very strong, plus he has the power of regeneration and flight. He wants to drain Jusenkyo to make a special water for himself.
KIIMA:
One of Saffron's followers, she drowned Akane in one of the Jusenkyo springs to create her own Akaneniichuan. Now she turns into Akane when splashed with cold water! She used to be able to fly also, but she gave it up when she jumped in the Akaneniichuan.
MASERA AND KORUMA:
Masera and Koruma were the two of Saffron's followers who followed Plum to Japan. Masera is the light skinned one, while Koruma is the darker one. Both have the power of flight and grow wings when splashed with cold water.
SENTAROU DAIMONJI:
A master of the martial arts tea ceremony, now married to Satsuki. Originally, though, he wanted Ranma-chan as his bride. This is because Satsuki was too shy to meet him, and sent her monkey in her place. Also, he seems to have this strange problem with run away horses...
SENTAROU'S GRANDMOTHER:
This little old woman is the true master of the martial arts tea ceremony. She taught it to both Sentarou and Ranma-chan.
SATSUKI DAIMONJI:
Sebtarou's bride, also a mistress of the martial arts tea ceremony. Very shy, very pretty. She sent her pet monkey Sanae in her place to meet her husband-to-be, because she was too shy to go. She also has a problem with run away horses.
PICOLETTE CHARDIN II:
One of the Tendo girls was engaged to him, but Ranma-chan went instead to, ah, discourage him, by posing as his fiancee. He's French, and a master of the martial arts dinner. He has a huge mouth and toungue, and can fit two whole dinner plates in his mouth at once. His whole family thinks it's elegant to eat like that. Go figure...
MADAME SAINT PAUL:
She's Picolette's governess, and was put to the task of making Ranma-chan more ladylike. She, however, decided that Ranma was too vulgar. She also put Ranma into a metal corset, which s/he can't get off! But worst of all, Ranma can't change back into a boy with it on...
KIRIN:
The leader of the Shishifuku Dojin. He kidnapped Akane and tried to make her marry him! He can only eat rice and pickles, for some reason. Yuk!!
THE SHISHIFUKU DOJIN:
The Shishifuke Dojin, or the Seven Lucky God Martial Artists, consist of Bishamonten, the twins Daikokusei and Daihakusei, the giant Muu, the pretty Monron and Ebiten.
LYCHEE:
Lychee is the true owner of the other half of Kirin's scroll, (which Akane happened to be holding when he came along, that's what got them all into this mess..) She is waiting for her prince, who will come with the other half of the scroll and marry her. She rode her elephant Jasmine to Nerima to get even with Happosai for giving her grandmother the scroll, as a 'good luck charm,' because it had only given her bad... and her prince still hadn't come!
THE OLD WASHER WOMAN:
This is the little old lady who is often seen outside her house washing down the path. Has a tendancy to splash Jusenkyo victims as they pass by...
