This was a year of upsets. The films that were expected to do
wonderfully didn't, and some of those that made it to the grade of 'overflow' or
nearabouts are competing with the likes of Ghulam and Bade Miyan Chote
Miyan...Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,, is the super-duper hit of the year.And despite the hype
about movies like Satya it just figures as an average hit (thought it is a
superhit in the Bombay and Central Provinces theatrical circuits), far beneath such
dubious films as Maut and the dubbed Miyan Bivi aur Woh. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
was the undoubted hit of the year, being classified a super-duper hit. Trailing by a long
distance were films like Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya and Soldier.
And in the semi-hit category is the aforementioned Bandhan and Dulhe Raja.
All in all, the mushy films scored over the others.
Among the big failures were Duplicate,
Jeans, China-Gate, Jhoot Bole Kauva Kaate, Banarasi Babu, Zor, Saat Rang Ke Sapne, Kareeb,
Dil Se, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, Kudrat, Zakhm and Wajood. Among the stars,
Salman Khan was declared the most successful by industry pundits, followed by Kajol, Rani

With Kajol establishing her supremacy amongst the fairer sex with hits like Kuch Kuch Hota
Hai, Pyar To Hona Hi Tha & Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, she moves from the fifth spot last
year to claim the number one spot this year
- Rani Mukherjee
The new entry in the top 5 from last year, Rani has to her credits films like Kuch Kuch
Hota Hai & Ghulam in her pocket.
- Raveena Tandon
She is the second new entry in the charts for her performance in movies like Dulhe Raja
& Bade Miya Chote Miya. She bags the no. 3 spot
- Urmila Matondkar
She bags the fourth spot for films like Satya & Chota Chetan and is the new entry in
the list
- Preity Zinta
The new entrant in the tinsel town bags the fifth spot in her debut year with hit film
like Soldier and a comme ci comme ca in form of Dil Se.

- Shahrukh Khan
Inspite of a bad start in Duplicate and middle collapse in Dil Se, Shahrukh bounced back
to produce the biggest hit of the year in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and regained the no. 1
position he held last year for hits like Dil To Pagal Hai, Pardes & Yes Boss.
- Salman Khan
With hits like Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and a
mediocre hit like Bandhan pushes Salman to the no.2 spot this year from no.5 last year.
- Ajay Devagn
With Pyar To Hona Hi Tha resurrected him, Ajay claims the no.3 spot. Last year, he was
unable to make it in the top 5.
- Aamir Khan
With sole hit in the form of Ghulam and Aati Kya Khandla becoming the overnight hit in
music charts, Aamir regains the no.4 spot held by him since last year.
- Govinda
Govinda claims the final spot in the list with films like Dulhe Raja & Bade Miya Chote
Miya. Last year, Govinda, like Ajay Devgan had failed to make it into the top 5
