Pretenders' Hynde Felt Humbled at "Women Rock!" Concert
Friday, October 11th, 2002 |
After the "Women Rock! Girls & Guitars" concert at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde said she had a great time with the other artists, but says she felt humbled by her co-stars. "Gloria Estefan had me, I thought I was going to lose it during my songs, because I kept thinking about stuff she was saying earlier on and everything. She's a riot, and really smart. I mean, I was like the dumb rock singer there. Everyone else was really the cream of their genre, and to get to sing on some of their songs, was fantastic for me."

The "Women Rock! Girls & Guitars" concert, which was hosted by Jennifer Love Hewitt, and featured Gloria, Michelle Branch, the Pretenders, Chaka Khan, and Lee Ann Womack, opened with all the ladies save Hewitt (who sang later) performing Khan's "I'm Every Woman." After that, Gloria, sitting on a stool, performed "Always Tomorrow" with her guitar. She then invited Chaka Khan for a medley of Gloria's "Coming Out of the Dark" and a song that Khan made a hit, "Through the Fire." Later during the show Gloria and Lee Ann Womack teamed up for a moving version of Womack's hit "I Hope You Dance." Another collaboration featured Gloria, Chrissie Hynde & Michelle Branch who sang the elegant ballad "I'll Stand By You." The requisite group finales were two-tiered, with an acoustic rendition of Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" and a spirited "I'll Take You There," another track made famous by Khan. Gloria, honored to be a part of this positive initiative, expressed how she got involved with the fight against breast cancer. "My best friends sister passed on due to breast cancer and that experience had a profound impact on my life. Any opportunity that I have to make women become more aware... I'm there!" |

Colin Powell: Estefans are "an Inspiration"
Thursday, October 10th, 2002 |
Secretary of State Colin Powell has lauded Cuban-American music giants Emilio and Gloria Estefan as inspirations for Hispanics. Powell hailed the couple for their contributions to American culture and civic good deeds, calling them ''an American success story'' at a State Department ceremony late Tuesday in Washington to honor National Hispanic Heritage Month. ''We're so proud of Emilio and Gloria and members of their family,'' said Powell, recalling that Emilio Estefan had arrived in the United States from Cuba as a 13-year-old unable to speak a word of English. ''His journey is an inspiration,'' he said, noting that Emilio had parlayed his success in producing not only the Miami Sound Machine, but also Jon Secada, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. ''His life is a living reminder to the Hispanic beat that is inside all of us, no matter where we came from,'' Powell said.

Gloria's Music Rocks Homecoming Parade
Thursday, October 10th, 2002 |
Octorara Area School District's 2002 Homecoming Parade had a new route this year - through the borough of Atglen. The crowds of spectators lining the streets were treated to a fine show from all the parade's perennial participants. Treating parade-goers to music was the OAHS Chorus, whose theme was "No matter what hardships life may bring, you can overcome adversity by taking control of your life." They chose Gloria Estefan's "Get On Your Feet" to illustrate its theme. The kids danced and sang so enthusiastically that their float literally rocked as it went down the street.

President Bush commends Emilio as "a Cool Guy"
Wednesday, October 9th, 2002 |
Today President Bush threw a White House reception in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. "Our country is a strong country because of our diversity," Bush told a buoyant East Room audience, mixing a smattering of Spanish into his remarks. "We welcome the great values that our Hispanic Americans bring to America, the values of faith y familia. Part of our entrepreneurial spirit is made stronger by the Hispanics who live in America." Mindful of the political importance of the growing Hispanic constituency, Bush took pains to introduce nearly everyone in the standing-room-only crowd numerous Hispanics he has appointed to posts in his administration, Latin sports luminaries and presidential friends. This is what he said about Emilio who was in attendance: "I appreciate my friend Emilio Estefan, who is the producer of this outfit. (Applause.) You want to talk about a cool guy. (Laughter.)" After the ceremony, Emilio and a few other celebrities mingled with reporters in the White House driveway.

If you listen to "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" by my dear friend Gloria Estefan, which I dearly love. Latin GRAMMY Show Outrageous!
Thursday, September 19th, 2002 |
EVENT PHOTOS
|
Conceivably noticed, Gloria looked hot and young in various outfits during last night's Latin GRAMMY Ceremony. Some people interpret her hosting the event as producers' attempt to diffuse past controversies. The change in venue last year was denounced by the Estefans. Last year's show, scheduled for Sept. 11, was canceled because of the terrorist attacks, which co-hosts Gloria and Jimmy mentioned at the beginning of the ceremony. "This year, we come together at the Kodak Theatre, in Los Angeles, with a new sense of commitment to continuing our way of life," said Smits, as the pair paid a brief tribute to the attack victims. "We honor those we lost and those that helped us get back on our feet," said Estefan. "We love you, New York."
Emilio, Nayib & Emily were in attendance. Gloria was shown in a pre-recorded clip on Extra with Emily talking about her hosting the GRAMMY's. Emilio didn't take any awards home even though he was nominated in these 2 categories:

Gloria Shines at the Kennedy Center
Thursday, September 12th, 2002 |
EVENT PHOTOS

| Last night, Gloria performed a heartfelt gospel-like version of her 1991 #1 smash hit "Coming Out of the Dark." Her sense of urgency and strength was evident in the way she channeled her vocals. You could see her trembling with energy. She had never sounded better indeed. President and Mrs. Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice and other dignitaries were part of the invitation-only audience. Bush said, "I want to thank all of the artists and all of the heroes who are here tonight." Among the latter, government and military personnel, emergency workers from New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, attack survivors and the families of victims were represented. A broad spectrum of artists was featured, including Placido Domingo, India Arie, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Jane Monheit, Renee Fleming, Denyce Graves, Chris Isaak, Al Green, Josh Groban, Enrique Iglesias and the National Symphony Orchestra, led by Leonard Slatkin. Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and Aretha Franklin, who had been scheduled to appear, were unable to attend because of deaths in their families. The program also featured film montages of Americana (including images from the World Trade Center), testimonies about the meaning of America from celebrities and ordinary citizens alike, and quotations from John F. Kennedy, John Updike, Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln and Pericles, delivered by James Earl Jones, Lance Armstrong, Angela Bassett, Kelsey Grammer and others. "It was a very moving tribute. It was very fitting. Not a day goes by that you don't think about the lives that were lost," "a bittersweet occasion. It's a gift to the nation to remember and mourn and to honor and celebrate" were just some of the comments on the concert. |

Gloria celebrated her 45th birthday one more time last night at the Bongo's Cuban Cafe Club. EEI staff, friends and relatives all joined her upstairs in the guarded VIP section. The place had posters of GHV2 and vinyl covers of Gloria singles and albums all over. They also had a stage for the everlasting drag queens to perform. Behind the stage was a big video-screen that had a slide show of Gloria pictures from her album and single photo shoots (some of which never seen before). Gloria was just chilling up there, sipping on her cosmopolitans and judging the drag-queen Gloria-impersonators performing on the stage below. Emilio was not present because he was taking care of Emily (the nanny needed the night off). Nayib is back home and by the looks of it he will no longer be living in London.
