Released: 3-26-2002
Theatrical Release: 8-2-2001
Stars: Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie
Includes the music video and theme song, "You Can't Walk Away From Love" by Gloria Estefan
Sultry Angelina Jolie and hot-blooded Antonio Banderas steam up the screen with their passionate sex scenes in this lurid melodrama, which combines the thematic elements of film noir with those of bodice-ripping period romance novels. Based on Cornell Woolrich's thriller Waltz into Darkness (previously filmed as Mississippi Mermaid, with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Catherine Deneuve in the leads), Original Sin takes place in the late 19th century, where Cuban-born plantation owner Luis Durand (Banderas) awaits the arrival of his mail-order bride. Instead of the rather plain-looking woman pictured in the faded photograph she sent him, Julia Russell (Jolie) turns out to be an alluring beauty whose charms are as irresistible as her past is mysterious. The convoluted story, adapted by writer-director Michael Cristofer (Body Shots), unfolds in a decadent tropical milieu and has a surfeit of overwrought dialogue and serpentine plot twists. But Original Sin is sensually enthralling fare of the "guilty pleasure" variety, and it deserves a spot on your shelf if only for the torrid scenes shared by Jolie and Banderas. Cristofer provides a commentary for the DVD, which also sports an elaborate music video (performed by Gloria Estefan) and an animated photo gallery.

World-class trumpeter Arturo Sandoval was a shining light in Cuba's exciting jazz scene and championed by jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie as one of the greatest musicians he'd ever heard. But as Sandoval's fame grew, so did his discomfort with Fidel Castro and Cuba's Communist leadership. Though Sandoval longed to leave Cuba and emigrate to the United States, where he could enjoy political freedom and make the most of his gifts as a musician, one thing held him back -- his love for his wife and children, whom he could not bear to leave behind. For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story is a made-for-cable drama based on the true story of Sandoval's career, his eventual flight to the United States with his family, and the unexpected roadblocks that nearly prevented him from becoming a naturalized American citizen. Andy Garcia stars as Arturo Sandoval, with Mia Maestro co-starring as his wife Marianela; Gloria Estefan, Tomas Milan, and Miriam Colon highlight the supporting cast.

INTO THE LIGHT WORLD TOUR (1992)
![]()
Released: 1992
Gloria's highly successful tour, live from Holland
Stars: Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine
Captured during a two-night stand at a Dutch arena, this 100-minute concert special documents Gloria Estefan's lavish 1991 world tour, which underscored the Cuban-American singer's graduation from acclaim as a dance-floor diva to the ranks of female pop superstars. At its best, Into the Light World Tour displays the relentless energy, personal warmth, and crack musicianship that Estefan and her husband, producer, and principal collaborator, Emilio Estefan Jr., had evolved through her old band, the Miami Sound Machine, and taken uptown through her solo career. When the star and her band kick into high gear, percussion simmering and horns blazing in taut, deftly arranged choruses, the propulsive lure of salsa is hard to resist.
Technically, Estefan is a singer with a supple tone but modest range, hardly suggesting the caliber expected of a bona fide diva. Neither does her small, compact frame suggest a dancer's physique, despite the production's reliance on extended dance sequences. Yet she makes the most with what she has, harnessing formidable physical energy and transmitting considerable warmth to her audience. Her material, including both Miami Sound Machine hits and subsequent solo signatures, works best when staying closest to her roots, riding the giddy syncopations of uptempo Latin rhythms, or plying the lambent emotions of traditional ballads. Her exhortations to dance--"Get on Your Feet," "Conga," and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" being the inevitable faves--work handily with an ecstatic audience.
More grizzled viewers should be forewarned that this, like most recent concert films, isn't purely documentary--apart from backstage sequences that duly flatter the star, the live sound has been liberally sweetened during post-concert production.
COMING OUT OF THE DARK (1991)
![]()
Released: 1990
A Documentary on Gloria's recovery after her 1990 near-fatal bus accident, how "Coming Out Of The Dark" came about, and highlights of her 1991 sellout "Into The Light World Tour,"as well as making of the videos of "Coming Out Of The Dark" and Seal Our Fate."
Stars: Gloria Estefan, Emilio Estefan, Miami Sound Machine
Designed as a companion to the singer's 1991 Into The Light--World Tour concert video, this look behind the scenes in Gloria Estefan's career draws drama and urgency from her recovery following a disastrous bus accident, which crippled the Cuban-American performer even as her popularity pushed further into the pop mainstream. Produced for the video arm of her record company, Coming Out of the Dark is hardly an objective documentary, laced as it is with testimonials from executives and frankly designed as a valentine to the feisty star; when we're given an "informal" look at Estefan composing new material in her music room, there isn't a figurative hair out of place as captured through these expertly shot segments.
The story, however, is intrinsically compelling, and Estefan offers her fans glimpses into the genesis of the songs from her Into the Light album. The singer's steely resolve, which doubtless explained the speed of her recovery, is visible, too, as is her sure sense of command over recording sessions. Brief performance excerpts show her saucy style of salsa-drenched pop, as well as less satisfying stabs at boiler-plate pop-rock songs that were aimed squarely at the charts. A segment chronicling a video shoot with choreographer-turned-director Kenny Ortega reveals both the technical intricacy of shooting elaborate dance sequences and the hyperbolic coddling platinum stars can expect from their most diplomatic handlers.
EVOLUTION (1990)
![]()
Released: 1990
Collection of Gloria Estefan & MSM's hit videos from 1984-1990
Stars: Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine
It seems to me that around the late 80's record companies didn't have the concept of including interviews or other material of the artist in video collections. This collection of videos by Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine is nothing more than a collection of videos (pardon the repetition). The title certainly applies, because it goes in chronological order, from very early ("dr. beat") to almost the 90's ("oye mi canto"). Look especially for the great videos "don't want to lose you," "oye mi canto," and "anything for you."
