Mira Sorvino has starred in At first sight, in The Replacement Killer, in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and in Mighty Aphrodite ( Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner, 1996 ), in Mimic, etc.
She was born on September 28, 1967 in Tenafly,
New Jersey. She didn't come from a very wealthy family and instead of sleeping
in a crib, she slept in an open drawer. Mira felt guilty because she felt
when she was born she took away her mother Lorraine's ream of being an
actress.
Mira's father
is Paul Sorvino and she also has two younger siblings, Michael and Amanda.
Michael actually makes his feature film debut in the movie "Summer of Sam."
He has a small cameo as one of the guys in the bowling shirts. Her sister
Amanda is a writer. I would really love it if they all were in a movie
together! Mira comes from a very tight-knit family. Her father taught the
Sorvino kids the meaning of respect. I hear Paul is an
excellent
cook and I wouldn't be surprised if Mira whipped up a mean batch of pasta.
Sometimes when the Sorvino family gets together, they do dualing impressions
of each other. Mira's sister Amanda came up with this silly idea by imitating
their father with a british accent.
"Mira, Mira on
the wall, who's the fairest of them all," her grandmother used to tell
her. Lorraine Sorvino knew Mira was something special because at the early
age of two she would imitate and do impressions of people. Mira was boy
crazy when she was little admitting she liked boys ever since she was conscious.
She was upset at the age of four because her boyfriend Rusty moved. She
cried to her parents she was going to live with him and cook for him. When
she was nine she had a huge crush on a
popular
boy in her grade named John. Mira and her friends would find ways to bump
into John or touch him so they'd have "John germs." Another interesting
thing is that her mother was the best party giver for kids. When kids came
to Mira's house they'd have treasure hunts or play improv games using household
objects.
Mira's
first play she performed in was when she was in third grade. It was called,
"The Mystery of Missing Capitalizations and Punctuations." She played the
part of a teacher named Miss Bigbrain. Her father loved to coach her and
give her notes but he did not want his daughter to act professionally.
She started to seriously get into acting in her late teens. Talent scouts
came to her school looking for girls who could horseback ride and act.
Mira had a horse at the time but she got some calls backs but didn't get
the part. Mira admits she was a goody-two-shoes in school.
She was a tall, shy girl who liked to pirouette around the school halls.
She was a straight A student who loved Biology, admitting if she had ten
lifetimes she'd be a doctor in one of them. Her worst subjects were Chemistry
and Physics. In 1986 she graduated from High School and entered Harvard
University
.
(I wonder what her SAT scores were?!) She loved college because students
took an interest in learning new things. No she did not go to her ten year
high school reunion but she plans to go to the next one.
She loves books and read, "The Good Earth," by Pearl S. Buck which led into her fascination with China and Chinese culture. At sixteen she read Donald Spoto's biography of Marilyn Monroe. Coincidence? She played Marilyn Monroe in the 1996 movie, "Norma Jean and Marilyn."
Some other things
she likes is chocolate, she loves James Dean, swiping sugar packets from
Starbucks, and furnishing things in her apartment that she gets from the
flea market in New York. She is also obsessed with 80's bands and enjoys
listening to: The Cars, Split Enz, Freedy Johnston, Prince, Radiohead,
Everclear, Lauren Hill, and her absolute favorite, Nirvana. After college
she
rented
a walk up in New York and worked several jobs to prove her father didn't
give her handouts. In 1992 she got a small part on a teen soap called,
Swans Crossing. She had the chance to be on Guiding Light but she felt
like it was a prison sentence. She got some small parts in films like Amongst
Friends and Barcelona.
She
went to Woody Allen's apartment as a hooker and talked in an accent to
help her get the part of Linda Ash in Mighty Aphrodite. Mira won an oscar
for best supporting actress for her role in Mighty Aphrodite. Kevin Spacey
won an oscar in 1995 too for best supporting actor in, "The Usual Suspects!"
Today she has appeared in over 20 films!! Films like Romy and Michele's
High School Reunion, Sweet Nothing, Summer of Sam, and the new Great Gatsby!
In my opinion Mira is the most wonderful actress who plays different roles
in her films every time! She's the most down-to-earth, kind-hearted, sweetheart.
She has the ability to touch you with her performances.
