Not a new regular CD by the Swedish kings of black metal, but a very interesting CD-EP
(also released as a 10-inch-vinyl) for collectors of coverversions. Dark Funeral are using
this release as a tribute to those bands who were influencing them when they were kids.
'The Trial' is a King Diamond song, which is done in a wonderful way, as also Slayer's
'Dead Skin Mask' is. Sodom's 'Remember The Fallen' is somewhat a strange choice and I would
have preferred something from the earlier Sodom albums, but the final 'Pagan Fears'
(orginally done by Mayhem) shows very efficiently where Dark Funeral's black roots are
coming from. The opener 'An Apprentice Of Satan' is a new song that can be found also as an
MPEG video clip on the CD-ROM part of the record. This only own composition is a preview to
the next album, and doesn't have to hide behind the four coverversions of this album. In the
past, I haven't been very familiar with Dark Funeral's music, but their fast, furious and
technically brilliant black metal makes bands like Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth appear as
kiddie rock bands... which they are as a matter of fact. So, teach your own children to
worship Satan and buy this CD if you like coverversions. If not, you better wait for the
next regular CD. 9 points for an interesting CD-EP that not only is showing off cool
covertunes, but also nearly last half an hour and therefore is value for money.
