n SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE
                                               OF MANSON!!

Marilyn Manson are a five piece band from Port Lauderdale who are best known for their death metal rock music. They formed in 1989 when a restless guy who had majored in photojounalsim with a dark look on American culture and a notebook full of poems met up with a equally restless guitarist composer who had been in five bands and wanted to now do something really different. Thier lyrics and music clicked instantly and they joined forces.
The man that had been the writter felt he wanted to change his name. He had decided on one that he felt displayed the entire spectrum that he wanted his music to project to people. 2 classic icons from the 1960's, Marilyn (Marilyn Monroe) and Manson (Charles Manson), formed Marilyn Manson which he thought was quite catchy. The guitarist who was full of enthusiasim followed Marilyn and became Daisy Berkowitz this had now set the pattern for all the band members to come.

By 1990 they had formed the band Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids, with Manson singing, Berkowitz on guitar and also Gidget Gein on Bass, Madonna Wayne Gacy on keyboard and a nameless drum machine. Thier first really big gig was opening for Nine Inch Nails on their summer tour, The main singer of NIN was still in a battle with his producer and had not gained his own record label but he liked the young band and became their informal manager.
They used a lot of shock value type things in thier shows such as,a Lite-Brite (TM) toy arranged to read "Kill God" ,and peanut-butter-&-jelly sandwiches tossed from the stage, to caged or crucified girls, skinned goats' heads, nudity and arson.  They would wear womens clothing and Manson sometimes may wear a womans swimsuit and read from "The Cat in The Hat," book and play Charles Manson soundbites. They issued a newsletter, and even had a "hot line" made for people to ring up and ask serious questions to them, they took their roles as mentors very seriously, Manson was once quoted as saying ""...in this position I've put myself in, I have the responsibility of influencing the minds of teenagers. So I do choose my words carefully... because I care. I care about what I say."

In 1992 the band thought that Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids was too long and confusing so they trimmed it down to just Marilyn Manson. The band got many nominations for the 1993 Slammies awards such as Band of the Year, Best Hard Alternative Band, Best Local Release (the "Family Jams" cassette), Song of the Year ("Dope Hat") , and even a Best Vocalist nomination for Mr. Marilyn Manson. "Dope Hat" won in its category, and the Mansons collected their first Band of the Year award. The summer of 1993 was a busy one for them as this was when they picked up their first real recording contract.
Trent Reznor (NIN) having finally won a vote of independence from his record label offered the band their first contract plus a spot to support them once again on their upcoming tour. MM accepted both offers and headed to Criteria Studios to start recording thier first album, Portrait of an American Family. The recording never got finished until Janurary 1994 as the band and Trent were not happy with what they were recording and practically re-wrote everything that was on the album.........and we all know the rest of the story...they got bigger and bigger from then on!!
