IGANICO - ENTENDS-TU LES CHIENS ABOYER?

Screaming the night away
With his great wing feathers
Swooping the darkness up;
I hear the Eagle bird
Pulling the blanket back
Off from the eastern sky.

Invitation Song (Iroquois)

Igancio is a soundtrack to the French-Mexican film, Entends-tu les Cheins Aboyer? (or Do You Hear the Dogs Barking?). (Apparently, Vangelis' best work for films has something to do with dogs like Antarctica). It is a gripping soundtrack and it is one of those ones where you'll never see the movie but know it only for its music. It is still a favorite amongst Vangelis fans and reveals nearly all the musical styles that Vangelis uses... Greek Orthodox sounding, light melodies, very choral pieces, film track, festive kind, avant-garde and so on.

[1] IGANICO PART ONE
It starts out with the familiar theme used in Carl Sagan's Cosmos. It is nice, relaxing lullaby and could be just an improvised ending to "La Mer Recommencee" (from L'Apocalypse des Animaux). Soon, after that theme is over, you move to a more pessimistic tone. The signing by the male choir and the bell rigning gives the sense that you are witnessing the Black Death unfolding. Soon, the mood melts away into a kind of Bizet piece (yes, I am referring to the First Carmen Suite). Then, the bombastic end and the return to the original theme in which you add an organ and choir.

[2] IGANICO PART TWO
It begins with piece which sounds it could be used in Spiral with its pulsating background and cheery sound. Then it all suddenly stops and you hear a series of random percussion instruments playing (like in Invisible Connections or Beaubourg). Then, it lightens up a bit into a kind of ascending lullaby. The finale is a kind of slow guitar piece. You could almost picture yourself having a drink and hearing the mariaches playing (and they would not shut up 'til they were paid ;). Then your mind soon drifts away... 'til next time around.
