Chapter 27
Forty-five minutes later, Stephanie pulled into Kevin's driveway and let herself in through the still open garage. She found Kevin up in his bedroom and stood there and watched him as he packed a few final things in his suitcases. She felt the need to run and hide again, but reminded herself that she had to face this. "So are you almost packed?" Stephanie asked as she leaned against the doorframe.
Kevin turned and looked at Stephanie. He was so relieved that she had come. He was a little worried that she would change her mind and run off again. "I just have a few final things to pack and then I think I am finished." Kevin said as he continued to look at Stephanie in the doorway.
"You certainly have a lot packed." Stephanie commented as she looked at all the stuff in the three suitcases Kevin had on the floor.
"Well I basically have to live out of them for two months." Kevin responded.
"Let's not talk about that tonight okay." Stephanie requested.
"If that is what you want. But if you do have something on your mind, please talk to me about it. Now how about we get away from these suitcases and go downstairs to the basement. You can go through my movie collection and we can watch a movie this afternoon." Kevin suggested.
"Sounds good to me." Stephanie said as she stood up straight and turned to head downstairs.
Kevin followed closely behind her and knew that today was not going to be an easy day. He feared that Stephanie was still battling with herself over him going away. He hoped he would be able to prove that their relationship could survive the miles, while he was away on this tour. He watched as Stephanie went straight for the shelf that held Kevin's vast collection of movies. She finally picked "Sleepless In Seattle". Kevin let Stephanie turn on the TV and put the tape into the VCR as he took a seat on the couch. He rested his back against the arm of the chair and placed a pillow on his lap to allow Stephanie to sit between his legs and comfortably rest her back against him. There was no exchange of words between them at all throughout the whole movie. He had to check on her a few times to make sure she hadn't fallen asleep on him. She was indeed awake throughout the whole movie and seemed to be in her own world. He respected that she was dealing with a lot that afternoon and gave her the time to deal with her own thoughts.
Once the movie was over, Kevin excused himself and ran up stairs for a quick minute. He had stopped off at a jewelry store and picked up a heart-shaped diamond necklace that he had seen a few days earlier. He wanted to leave Stephanie with a small token of his affection before he left. He wanted her to have something that would remind her of their relationship and how much he loved her. He was back downstairs within in a few minutes and sat down beside Stephanie on the couch. "I picked this up for you earlier today." Kevin said as he held out his hand with the blue velvet box resting in the middle of his palm.
Stephanie looked up at Kevin and then back down at he box. She looked up at him again and said, "What is it?"
"Why don't you open it up and find out." Kevin replied.
Stephanie slowly reached out her hand and took the blue velvet box out of Kevin's hand. She was sure that Kevin could visibly see her hands shaking. She slowly opened the box and jumped as the spring-loaded box popped open. Tears instantly filled her eyes as she looked at the diamond heart-shaped necklace. She had always dreamed of having one just like it.
"Do you like it?" Kevin asked.
"Do I like it? I love it!" Stephanie said as she looked up at Kevin through her tear-filled eyes.
"Well, let me help you put it on." Kevin said as he took the box out of Stephanie's hands and took the delicate chain into his large hands. Stephanie turned around and held up her hair to make it easier for Kevin to put the necklace on. When she felt the diamond heart fall on her chest, her hand instinctively rose to her chest and held it. "There you go, took my big clumsy fingers a few seconds to get it on." Kevin said.
"Who have you been talking to?" Stephanie asked as she turned around, still clutching onto the heart-shaped pendant.
"What do you mean? I wasn't talking to anyone." Kevin said, confused.
"I have always dreamt of having a necklace like this." Stephanie replied.
"Well I am glad that I could make a dream come true for you." Kevin said.
"Thank-you Kevin!" Stephanie said as she threw her arms around Kevin's neck.
"Your welcome Steph. I wanted to give you something before I left and when I saw that the other day, it had your name written all over it." Kevin said.
"How do I ever make this up to you?" Stephanie asked as she took the pendant in her hand again.
"Just say that you'll always be there for me Stephanie. I love you with all my heart and couldn't stand to lose you." Kevin responded.
"I don't think that will be a problem. And Kevin, I love you too." Stephanie said, finally feeling comfortable saying that to Kevin, because she knew in her heart that she believed that.
For the remainder of the afternoon, Stephanie and Kevin took a long walk on his property and then cooled off in the swimming pool. They were both able to forget the fate that was waiting for them and just enjoy each other's company. Then Stephanie suggested that they have a dinner just like their first dinner together. Kevin fortunately had some steaks in the freezer and they both prepared dinner together. She declined the champagne this time, because she wanted to have all her senses for their last night together.
After dinner, they both did the dishes together and then sat out on the deck with a cup of coffee and watched the sunset. They sat there and talked until the only source of light was the moon. Kevin then stood up and took Stephanie's hand in his own. "Come on. I think it is time to move up to the bedroom for the rest of the evening." Kevin said as he looked down at the woman he loved.
She took his hand and followed him upstairs. He closed the bedroom door behind them and didn't even bother to turn the lights on. He liked the way the moon was illuminating the room. He could see Stephanie's silhouette before him and had every intention of showing Stephanie how much he loved her. He gently put his hands on her waist and she took his cue by wrapping her arms around his neck. He quietly started singing the song "I Will Always Love You" in her ear. They continued moving together long after Kevin stopped singing. It just felt like the right thing to both of them. After quite sometime, Stephanie let her hands roam up and down Kevin's back, letting her hands go lower and lower each time. Kevin moved his hands to the front of Stephanie's chest and slowly undid all the buttons that were holding her blouse together.
