GAKKI, a japanese word for
musical instrument, is about the freedom to explore a wide spectrum of sounds, often
stepping over if not breaking down cultural and stylistic bawlers. With its most recent
recording, GAKKI sets out to go beyond a simple mix or collage of cultures, and develop a
more subtle, fluid and seamless music, where influences are preferably felt rather than
readily labelled. Although one will recognize on Song of the Hew World pertains elements
of the American continent, from the Inuit of Ungava Bay to the Arizona Hopl and Maya of
the Chlapas, it is without pretense that GAKKI approaches these melodies and sounds
inspired by the First Nations. Rather, by avoiding imitation and letting its imagination
run, GAKKI found itself crossing over to a timeless and exotic America. A «New World»
wish has also seen India, Japan, Indonesia... Where a Native American melody is heard on
tenor sax and Indonesian gongs, where the shakuhachi or sitar evoques the great artlc
expanses, where a Mayan chant is set to an urban jazz/funk feel... GAKKI is also the
encounter of three unique and talented musicians whose past experience greatly contributes
to the success of Song of the New World. This no-bass trio manages to bring together such
diverse planetary influences and an impressive ecclectic collection of musical instruments
into a particularly coherent and expressive music. No doubt the listener will share in
thls redesigning of the world map - a geopoetic world. |
