{202} [4] [100] "Danville Turnpike"
Auburn, ME - 2005-02-27

The Danville Turnpike is my tongue-in-cheek name for this abandoned stretch of asphalt in Auburn, Maine.
Beginning at a closed bridge at the end of Cameron Ln, it extends about 1/3 of a mile east to Station Rd, where the end is fenced off just to the west of the railroad overpass pictured below.
Along with Eastman Ln, Old Portland Rd, Poland Spring Rd, Cameron Ln, and Station Rd, this was signed as US-202, ME-4 & ME-100 until at least 1955.
I drove in the east end one fine February day and took a little hike, snapping some photos on the way.

Thumbnails open the snaps in a new window. Close to return here.
A railroad bridge carrying the St. Lawrence and Atlantic line over the eastern end of the road.
That's Station Road in the background. My car's about as far in as you can drive; the road is fenced off after the bridge. ATVs and snowmobiles can still pass.
This car was just out of view to the left of the above shot.
Detail of a plaque on the bridge:

The north wall of the underpass.
Looking west along the road from atop the overpass.
The pavement is still quite intact under all this snow.
An old culvert about 2/3 of the way along the abandoned route.
Looking north.
Looking down at the other end of the same.
Looking back east.
From about the same spot. I think.
Cameron Lane is still maintained up to the one house on the road.
Just after the driveway, the roadway is blocked off before a bridge, which is in disrepair.
Detail of some posts on the south side of the above bridge.
On Poland Spring Rd, looking across US-202 at Moose Brook Rd. The street sign and DEAD END for Cameron Ln can be seen middle left, behind Moose Brook's stop sign
