Bjork Gudmunsdottir was born on November 21, 1965, in Reykjavik, Iceland to parents Hilda and Gudmundur. She was raised in a hippie commune by her mother and stepfather. At age 11 Bjork recorded an album of mostly popular songs (as well as some of her own) entitled Bjork. This early album was surprisingly popular in Iceland, and it could be said that Bjork's career has gone uphill ever since. As a child she was involved in several bands, such as Spit & Snot and Exodus. Later, as a teenager, Bjork was involved with several bands of considerably more merit: Tappi Tikkarass and Kukl. She released two albums with each of these bands, but neither undertaking really got anywhere.

In 1986 she gave birth to a son named Sindri (she was married to Thor Eldon at the time). Both she and Thor, as well as other members of Kukl eventually formed the largely successful band The Sugarcubes. The Sugarcubes released three albums: Life's Too Good (1988), Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week (1989) Stick Around For Joy (1992), as well a remix album It's It (1992).

Alas, the Sugarcubes disbanded in 1992, and the members went their separate ways. Bjork released Debut in 1993, thus revealing her creative genius to the world. Debut was a successful album, with such singles as Human Behavior, Big Time Sensuality and Violently Happy gaining airplay on MTV and radio stations. It was followed up by Post in 1995, and the singles from that album - Army of Me (also on the "Tank Girl" soundtrack), and I Miss You further popularizing the music of this Icelandic diva.

1996 saw the release of a remix album of Bjork songs - Telegram. In late 1997 Bjork released Homogenic, and the first single, Joga, has seen considerable airplay on both MTV and M2. No one can say what the future will bring from Bjork as she continues to push the envelope of modern music.
