The first Mushing book we read and a good place for others to start. The lengthy text and helpful pictures provide coverage of all aspects of having a sled dog kennel. If you are looking for your first book out lining aspect of having sled dog look no further. Get this one.
The Speed Mushing Manual An excellent book by Jim Welch for every dog driver or would-be dog musher. Comprehensive reference for buying, breeding, feeding, conditioning, training, equipping, and racing sled dogs. Jim Welch offers great tips on how to take your sled dogs to "the next level" - racing in local or more advanced competitions. 127 pages 1990.
I am not able to take full advantage of every aspect of this book due to my novice position in the sport. I do feel that there is a volume of good advice in this modest sized book. An easy to understand book with a high ratio of helpful advice per page. Though more suitable to the musher with a few years on the sled, much of the advice will help the beginner as well.

Your Dog in Harness by Mel Fishback Riley. Full of useful information for the beginning musher. Topics include dog selection, temperament, basic training, getting started, equipment, puppy selection, lead training, kenneling, weight pulling, packing, feeding, breeding and more. 68 pages 8-1/2x11.
I found this small well illustrated text to be the most useful to me as a beginner. Page per page the beat introductory text I have read on mushing.
Training Lead Dogs by Mel Fishback. Concentrates on the positive relationship between the driver and the team. It is one of the best training texts available for experienced or beginning musher. Softcover 108 pages. Fishback, Lee. Training Lead Dogs. Nunica, Michigan: Tundra, 1978.
