Spirit of The Wild - The George Attla Story by Lew Freedman 223 pages 2000
An inspiring chronicle of the greatest sprint mushers life long struggle to prove himself. I find his story particularly meaningful to me since I like George have a bad leg and loss of vision. Each chapter takes a snap shot of a period in George's life. Every stage of his life is covered from youth the present. An inspiration to the musher and spectator alike.
IDITAROD COVERAGE:
The Iditarod Fact Book: A Complete Guide to the Last Great Race by Sue Mattson (Editor) Issued in February 2001, this entertaining and informative guide to the Iditarod reveals the dramatic history of distance racing, listing the breeds of dogs used, the rules that have been refined over many years, the rigorous training regimes of mushers and dogs, the equipment, and the village checkpoints.
The large font printing made this very easy for me to read. Once read, the book can serve as a quick reference guide to the Iditarod every year the event roles around. TSD
Fan's Guide to the Iditarod , by Mary H. Hood and Robert J. Berndt
A complete reference guide (412 pages!) to all races up to 1996
On Xmas wish list. TSD
My Lead Dog Was a Lesbian: Mushing Across Alaska in the Iditarod - Brian Patrick O'Donoghue brings both the humorous and the fearful aspects of the race alive, based on his running of the 1991 Iditarod.
We read Honest Dogs the same authors account of his Yukon Quest race fist so we had become familiar with his writing style which continued in this account. This book was a more cohesive account of a race and had little content I found confusing to the novice.
Back of the Pack: An Iditarod Rookie Musher's Alaska Pilgrimage to Nome by Don Bowers
On my Xmas Wish List.
*********TOP PICK***********Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod Told as only someone who has actually run the race can, by Gary Paulsen.
We read this book long before seeing Snow Dogs the movie, another fine piece of entertainment but only loosely based upon this book. Pulsen's training and race antics fill the book with great humor and delight. I found this book to be one of the best books I have ever read. It is better than Snow Dogs the movie.
YUKON QUEST COVERAGE:
Running North: A Yukon Adventure - Ann Mariah Cook's highly-rated book tells the story of her family's determination to run the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest. Cook is a Siberian Husky breeder and judge.
Hope to read our copy soon.
Honest Dogs - Brain Patrick O' Donoghue If you want to run the Yukon Quest or just imagine you are out there then this book will give you the insight needed. I found the back of the pack perspective with some leader insights, in to the 1998 Quest, a realistic perspective to view the race from for me, the novice musher. What I did not like was the vague reference to disciplining dogs. These reference confuse the non musher creating misperceptions of the proper training techniques one should use.
Yukon Alone - John Balzar Another book covering the 1998 Yukon Quest same as Honest Dogs. So if you have Honest Dogs, you will find that this book has some of the same stories. Also John Balzar is not a racer, he is a journalist following the race.
Hope to read our copy soon.
