DICK DALE
Dick Dale recorded Let's Go Trippin (Deltone 5017 (9/61) due to favorable audience response, with cries of "Let's go trippin'", at the Rendezvous Ballroom. This, Dale's first instrumental song, of the six releases on his fathers label, reached #60 on the national charts. The first recording using the Fender Reverb Unit, defining the surf sound, was Miserlou (5/62) based on a Greek folk tune of the '40s. The success of Surf Beat (11/62) firmly established Dale as King of the Surf Guitar (6/63). If you see him perform Peter Gun (7/75) and Ghost Riders in the Sky (6/63,94) you too will call him king. Check Dick Dales tours dates, also see "New Surf Bands"
Dick Dale formed The Deltones, in early ''61, and started playing instrumental music. He opened in a Balboa club stuffed with surfers who went crazy for his double picking guitar style. Dale compared his style of playing to the sensation he got on a surfboard. Since then, the term, "Surf", no longer applies to the sport, alone, but to a music style as well. Dick Dale's first instrumental release August '61 Let's go trippin' was the first to use of a prototype guitar reverb unit. Through his work with Leo Fender, Dale was instrumental in the development of the Fender Showman amps, and the Fender outboard reverb unit (initially created to add reverb to Dales voice). Both of which became hallmarks of the "surf sound". In 1974 he appeared on of Keith Moon's solo album "Two Sides of the Moon". In 1987 he contributed together with SRV to the soundtrack of "Back to the Beach" performing in the film. His firth album since '95 was released January '02 . Also, he tours regularly and is well worth seeing. I have done so twice and hope to do so again.
