a teenage group from Santa Ana, had one of the biggest and best instrumental surf hits, Pipeline (12/62
), so named after members saw a Bruce Brown film, for it was previously named, "Liberty's Whip", inspired by the movie "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance".
Pipeline,
the Chantays only hit, reached #4 on the Billboard charts May '63 selling
over a million copies. Having the first surf record to chart in England, reaching #16 (6/63), the Chantays became the first to tour overseas as well. A Chantays original
Tragic Wind (63) was named after high tide waves, which whip out surfers.
