THE PYRAMIDS
The Pyramids first single was Pyramid Stomp (62).Their follow up Penetration (2/64) went to #18. The movie Bikini Beach (64) highlights one of their gimmicks: Mop top wigs worn over bald heads. They performed Bikini Drag in the movie but it went unreleased till '95.

The Pyramids had a short-lived one-year career recording for a handful of Detroit-based labels during 1962 and were notable for being one of the first acts to feature Vernon Williams (Satintones, Royal Holidays, Four Sonics + 1).
Vernon Williams (lead), Bobby Jones (first tenor), Robert Gibson (second tenor), Damond Rockland (baritone), and Norman Worthy (bass) formed the group in late 1961. Williams -- inspired by acts like Spaniels and the Pearls and a strong admirer of Pookie Hudson and Howie Guyten --- had already built quite a resume and had just come from the lineup of the Satintones quintet, who were Motown Records’ first group, recording six singles between 1960-1961 during the labels Blues and R&B era (pre-Funk Brothers). Williams sang lead on the Satintones’ "I Know How It Feels" in 1961.
Prior to joining the Satintones, Williams had been with the Royal Holidays, who "recruited" him to join the group not only for his singing ability, but also for his writing talents. Between 1955 and 1958, the Royal Holidays honed their skills and gained experience performing at local dances and teen clubs in the Detroit area and recorded for their manager Harry Niven’s Penthouse label.
For their first single, Williams and the Pyramids holed up in Continental Recording studios on 12th Street in Detroit, where they recorded "Crying" b/w "I Am the Playboy" for Sonbert, owned by Sonny Sanders and Robert Bateman. "Crying" was also reissued on the well-known Cub label. Following this release, the Pyramids recorded for VeeJay (1962), but disbanded in early 1963 when Vernon Williams was drafted into the service.
By the early '70s, Vernon Williams had joined the Four Sonics +1 and recorded one single for the JMC label: "There's No Love" b/w "If It Wasn't for My Baby" (JMC 141), before splitting. Williams is still involved with music, concentrating on writing music with his partner, Jay Johnson (the Diablos, Velvet Angels, and Four Sonics).
All of the Pyramids members are still alive (except Charles Farley) and reside in the Detroit area. Incidentally, another group -- this one a surf group -- adopted the name the Pyramids in early 1964 and scored a Top Twenty hit with "Penetration," the last big national instrumental surf hit. ~ Bryan Thomas, All Music Guide
