Calista means "most beautiful." Flockharts father was a food industry executive and her mother a schoolteacher.
The family moved around quite a bit while calista was growing up,
including Minnesota, New York, Illinois, and New Jersey.
After high school she attended Rutgers University and recieved a
bachelor of fine arts degree.
She went on to pursue a career in New York, sustaining herself as
a waitress, and a towel girl at a health club. Off broadway and
regional theater were plenty, and eventually she landed a role in
the Broadway production of 'Glass Menagerie'. But it was in an off
off broadway production where she caught the eye of director Mike
Nichols. He was so impressed with Calista he cast her in
'The Birdcage', the hit movie starring Robin Williams.
Although she had reservations about doing a television show,
a friend told her about the script to 'Ally McBeal'.
She impressed the producers so much they had to pressure her to
take the role. Obviously, she relented, and we're all glad she did.
