"Crossing Over" Airdate and Report
While in New York recently, Gene Simmons filmed a segment of, "Crossing Over
with John Edward," which will air on or about August 22nd, and will be
syndicated on CBS, NBC, and ABC nationwide (check your local listing for
details). Edward, a self-proclaimed psychic who says he can communicate with
deceased relatives and friends, had a one-on-one with Simmons. Simmons, a
lifelong skeptic of the paranormal, and of anyone who's a self-proclaimed
anything, actually had a very cordial face-to-face with Edward. Both seemed
to enjoy the experience quite a bit.

Century Media Records
After an amazing 5 weeks tour in North America with Nevermore, Opeth and God
Forbid, the German power metal act Angel Dust is back home working on the
material for their next studio album. The record is tentatively titled Of
Human Bondage and will present the band in a slightly heavier, more
straight-forward direction than last year's successful Enlighten The
Darkness. The album's cover will probably feature the angelic photography
courtesy of the well known Austria artist Gerald Axelrodt (whose work already
adorned the front on Enlighten...) and the recordings will take place again
with producer Siggi Bemm at Woodhouse Studio starting on August 21st. The
band's current line-up went through some changes lately, as Angel Dust not
only announced the comeback of their old drummer and founding member Dirk
"Assy" Assmuth (who was out of the band for a while and replaced by Michael
Sticken) as well as the news of a new guitar-player Ritchie Wilkison (Demons
& Wizards, etc.). Ritchie had already played guitars for Angel Dust during
their US/Canada tour but is now fully integrated in the band's line-up as
steady member so that he will be involved with the songwriting for Of Human
Bondage. Ritchie is replacing former axeman Bernd Aufermann (the band and him
parted ways in friendly terms some weeks ago and he's already working on his
own new musical projects) and will be coming over to Europe for the next
couple of weeks to join forces with the rest of Angel Dust. The band's 2001
revamped line-up therefore consists of: Dirk Thurisch (vocals), Ritchie
Wilkison (guitars), Steven Banx (keyboards), Frank Banx (bass) and Dirk
Assmuth (drums). Additionally, Angel Dust have been asked to return to
American soil in response to the wholehearted reaction they received on their
first intercontinental tour: The five-piece is confirmed to appear at this
year's edition of ProgPower/Earthlink Festival in Atlanta,GA on the November
9th, playing together with bands such as Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Dan Swanö's
Nightingale, Kamelot, Spiral Architect and many more.
In other news, the domestic release of their 1998 album, Border Of Reality,
was released in the US on June 12th and includes two bonus tracks (a Uriah
Heep cover and a previously unreleased song from the Enlighten The Darkness
sessions) so make sure to pick it up while waiting for their next full-length!
Vocalist Edu Falaschi, drummer Aquiles Priester, and bassist Felipe Andreoli
have joined founding members, guitarists and main songwriters Kiko Loureiro
and Rafael Bittencourt to complete the new line-up of Angra. The band is
currently going through a very fruitful songwriting period. There are several
new tracks already completed, plus many others being finalized. They will be
heading into the studio in June to record the effort, with sights set on a
late October release.
The Italian melodic metal composers Lacuna Coil recorded their new album,
titled Unleashed Melodies, at Woodhouse Studio with producer Waldemar
Sorychta. The final track listing is as follows: "Heir Of A Dying Day", "To
Live Is To Hide", "Purify", "Senzafine", "When A Dead Man Walks", "1:19",
"Cold Heritage", "Distant Sun", "A Current Obsession" and "Wave Of Anguish".
The band once again take you on an awe-inspiring journey laying down their
strongest material ever that saw a European release on January 29th and US
release (which includes the band's Halflife EP as an exclusive bonus since it
was previously unreleased in the States) on March 20th. The group recently
finished up the 2001 Metal Odyssey festival tour that featured Nevermore,
Dimmu Borgir, In Flames and Susperia and are looking into future touring
possibilities.
Yngwie making history in China!
As it turns out, when Yngwie performed in Hong Kong last week the Chinese
Government had party members in the audience watching the event. They were
highly impressed. So much so that they have extended an invitation to have
Yngwie be one of the few Western musicians ever to tour the whole of China.
The comments they made were that Yngwie's music was not like the typical
western music they hear, but instead contained complex technique and melodic
content which they find lacking in most modern-day Western music. They
referred to Yngwie as a "modern day Mozart with electricity". As a guest of
the Chinese Government, Yngwie would be performing both rock shows and
CONCERTOS with the Chinese National Orchestra in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, and
many other cities throughout China. Details are being discussed now with
Management to see how arrangements will be made. No finalized plans have been
made at this time, although the intention is to be in China during the month
of August. Representatives of the Chinese Government would accompany
Malmsteen at all times.
More details to follow as this historic event unfolds.

Skinlab have lined-up guitarist Glen Telford, a New Zealand bred guitarist formerly of Los Angeles' Wired Shut, to replace recently departed guitarist Scott Seargent. The band is currently recording their new album, The Revolting Room, with producer Steve Evetts (Sepultura, Hatebreed). In other news, they will have their new song "Come Get It" featured in the new movie "Rites Of Passage", a 100-minute documentary that includes Ultimate Fighting champion Royce Gracie.

Nevermore just completed headlining a major 4-band US tour with Opeth, Angel Dust & God Forbid that ran through May which was more successful than anyone could imagine! Feel sorry for yourself if you missed it! Make sure to check out their latest album, Dead Heart In A Dead World, if you haven't already (released last October in the US). The noticeably heavier album was recorded with Andy Sneap (Testament, Stuck Mojo, Machine Head) at Village Productions in Tornillo, Texas and features some of the greatest Travis Smith artwork the world has ever seen. The band recently filmed a video for the song "Believe In Nothing" that shall be appearing on various video shows in the coming months as well as on a CD-single for the song that is now available through our mail order and contains two cover songs ("Sound Of Silence" and "Love Bites") as well as a previously unreleased track ("All The Cowards Hide"). ~
The band has finished work on their upcoming full-length, Silence, that contains over 60 minutes of music and features cover artwork from Eric Philippe (who did the first two Rhapsody album covers among others). The final tracklisting is as follows: "...Of Silence", "Weballergy", "False News Travel Fast", "The End Of This Chapter", "Black Sheep", "Land Of The Free", "Last Drop Falls", "San Sebastian [Revisited]", "Sing In Silence", "Revontulet", "Tallulah", "Wolf & Raven" and "The Power Of One". Expect Silence on July 16th in Europe and September 4th in the US. Also, the Tribute To Scorpions is out now on Nuclear Blast featuring Sonata Arctica's cover of "Still Loving You".
Stuck Mojo's latest album, Declaration Of A Headhunter, is in stores now. The follow-up to Rising has had jaws dropping as the band has crafted their strongest material to date. Declaration... features a wide range of styles assisted by the multiple vocal styles of Bonz, Rich and Dan. This is definitely the band's heaviest hitting and most melodic effort and it is already receiving great feedback from magazines like Metal Edge and Guitar World. Also, the band's controversial lyrical stance and message have had many talking. The next Mojo release is titled Violate This and is comprised of two brand new songs plus numerous B-sides, previously unreleased and rare tracks. Violate This is scheduled for an August 21st US release. Also, be on the lookout for the new album from side-project band Fozzy that features Stuck Mojo members and wrestler Chris Jericho covering various metal songs.

German power metal veterans Blind Guardian are nearly finished recording their new album which you can read about in the "New Album" section on their official website. The band and Charly Bauerfeind will produce the album. Lyrically, there will be a topical issue for each song. The music is reportedly a straight progression of Nightfall In Middle Earth and Imaginations From The Other Side, though the band assures that there will be some surprises, of course. At least one song (the longest they have written so far: 13 minutes) will be dedicated to author J.R.R. Tolkien. A release date has not been scheduled for the album yet but stayed tuned for details.

Worry not metal minions, the long awaited live Death release is not too far away. This amazing piece of work was recorded at The Whisky in Hollywood on their 1998 tour with HammerFall. In addition to the CD, for your visual pleasure, we will also release the performance on DVD and VHS. Live in L.A. (Death & Raw) will splash down this October in all version. This will be the last release by the legendary Death so be sure to get your copies.
The thrashing metal three-piece is back with a vengeance, and The Antichrist will stop for no one. September 18th will see its release onto the masses – be ready to get crushed. Also, to fill your Destruction needs ahead of time, the band is featured on the Nuclear Blast Festivals 2000 DVD. This DVD also features live performances by Hypocrisy, Kataklysm, Crematory and Raise Hell (be sure to check out Hypocrisy’s Peter Tägtgren playing alongside Schmier and Mike). Look for a September 4th release.
While you dream of hearing Destruction’s The Antichrist keep these words in mind:
“The Antichrist should come packaged with a bottle of aspirin, because after all the headbanging, your throbbing neck will be begging for a rest.” – Mark Gromen (www.bravewords.com)
Get ready – the finishing touches are falling into place for the next Dimmu Borgir North American tour. As originally rumored, they will hit the road with Napalm Death, but it has worked out to be so much more than that. The tour, scheduled to begin in late September, will actually be a traveling festival featuring Six Feet Under as headliners. Supporting will be Dimmu Borgir, Napalm Death and Witchery with other bands still in the works. Look for more news on the festival coming soon. In the meantime, if you
cannot wait for Dimmu’s return, they will be playing a handful of South American and Mexico dates so zip on down and check ‘em out.
Not too much longer now until the release of The Tokyo Showdown Live. After five CDs it’s about time we got a live release – there is almost too much material that you would want to hear them play live, but they manage to include some of the best in this performance. Killer tracks like “Moonshield,” “Jotun,” “Scorn” and “Gyroscope” flow alongside the best from Clayman. If you missed them on any of their extensive North American tour stops or, like me, you just can’t get enough In Flames then September 4th will be your lucky day.
I hope you’re ready for the cataclysmic return of Canada’s reigning hyper-blast kings. Epic (The Poetry of War) is scheduled for release on September 18th, and it will blow you away. This release will definitely show up on a few “best of” lists for 2001 as it manages to retain all that makes Kataklysm a superior band but improves upon them ten-fold. The vocals and tempos on Epic show a great amount of variety over previous efforts. Start collecting your spare change now and by the time the September release rolls around you can trade it in for magnificence. Look for these guys to tour Canada in August, as well as their appearance at Milwaukee Metalfest. A full North American tour is also in the works.
Are currently busy working on their new album, tentatively titled S.E.T.I - ( The Search for Extraterrestrial Existence) after the NASA space observation program monitoring alien communication. More news on this as it comes in… expect an early 2002 release.
Want to know how it all started? Meshuggah offers up Rare Trax, a compilation of… well… rare tracks. Included on this disc is the 1989 Psykisk Testbild EP (which was limited to only 1000 vinyl copies), as well as other unreleased material and some videos. This release is a great way to see how Meshuggah has evolved and, of course, the videos are well worth the price of the disc – you are just going to have to trust me on this one and check it out… just remember you have to watch the “Tour and Studio Clips” video.
Oh, to live in Europe… Savatage is still on tour throughout Europe supporting Judas Priest. The Dutch will witness the last show of the tour as it wraps up on July 14th at the Bospop festival. The second leg of the North American tour is still in the works, but expect them around before year's end. For all you living down South, or if you are a complete diehard, the band will be playing several South American dates as well as a jaunt through Mexico before returning North so you can catch them there. Poets and Madmen continues to sell like crazy with major press still rolling in – be sure to check out the extensive features in the most recent issues of Metal Edge and Metal Maniacs.
If you make just one trip this summer to see a band, make sure it is to Milwaukee to catch the first North American performance by the up-and-coming kings of Swedish melodic death metal, Soilwork. Hot off their Japanese tour and eager to show Milwaukee what they are made of, these guys will destroy all. For the lucky ones in Milwaukee this will be your first and last chance to catch them before they enter the studio to record their next opus.
In other band news, please welcome the addition of Evergrey’s Sven Karlsson on keys. In previous reports the band has expressed that they would not be replacing the position vacated by keyboardist Carlos Del Olmo and had agreed to use a DAT instead. Lucky for Sven they later decided that a human is better than a machine… imagine that. Sven will be performing with the band at the metalfest – yet another reason to go see them.
The band's outstanding new release, Book of the Dead, is well on its way to being the most successful Steel Prophet release yet. The band will be hitting the road this summer in the Midwest as well as performing at some of the summer festivals here in America.
If you live in or near Los Angeles, be sure to come down to the Steel Prophet Book of the Dead CD release party at the Dragonfly on July 8th (yes, this Sunday). It should be a fun-filled night of music. Joining Steel Prophet will be Onward, Order of the Illuminati (Agent Steel), New Eden and Cage. If you cannot make it to that show, they will be playing again at the Troubadour in Hollywood on Saturday, July 28th in support of Flotsam and Jetsam and at Milwaukee Metalfest on August 10th and 11th.
Intermission hit the stores on June 26th, so you have no excuse for not having a copy by now. Okay, well, it has only been a week, but you better grab a copy next time you are out. This great new release contains 4 brand new tracks as well as rare b-sides and live songs. It is a definite must have for collectors and fans of power metal alike.
“There is no doubt in my mind that every fan of Stratovarius should own Intermission. Even if you already have most of the rare bonus tracks, like I do, it is great to have them all in one album. The new songs are excellent and hearing the live version of "Hunting High & Low" is about the closest I will get to a Stratovarius show any time soon. Your Stratovarius collection will be incomplete without Intermission.” – Rodrigo, Ultimate Metal
Listen to Rodrigo – because, as I have mentioned before, this will be the last Stratovarius release until 2003.

Howling Syn just came back from the studio and we are all currently busy at preparing the release of "Forebearers of Dusk". The studio session went very well and it unveiled the real sound of Howling Syn! Some may think they will miss the electronical/instrumental sound that made Howling Syn in the last year and a half but Forebearers of Dusk will take Howling Syn to a higher level and is what the band was really meant to be. We are also working on preparing the release party of the album. We plan to have free CDs and more to give away and it will feature the first Howling Syn concert ever.
