                                                The Chandler Family History

Almost all Chandler families can trace their ancestry back to one of two ancient lineages.
After arriving in the American colonies, one line migrated through Pennsylvania, the other
through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and then Tennessee where they stayed for
many generations.  Because of the route followed by those families, it is easily believed
that this is our line of Chandler ancestry.  The earliest ancestor is Nicholas, born in 1540 at
Oare, Wiltshire, England.  While both Chandler lineages come from England, a common
ancestor has never been identified that would connect the two branches.

*ROBERT CHANDLER, Sr. (1) was born in 1695.  He and his wife *ELIZABETH
arrived in the Jamestown area of Virginia and migrated up the James River.  It is not
proven who their children were other than our own ancestor, also named ROBERT.
Because several families moved to the same places at the same time, it can be assumed that
they are closely related but those relationships could either be cousins or siblings.  The
Chandlers moved several times, following the edges of the wilderness.  They could not
read or write and often did not register births or marriages.  On several documents they
added  their mark instead of a signature.

*ROBERT CHANDLER (2) was the son of Robert Chandler, Sr. and Elizabeth. He was
born in 1720 in Henry County, Virginia.  Robert's wife was *PARTHENIA, called
Partheny and she was also born in Henry County.  Their first eight children were born in
Henry County between 1751 and 1769. The next children were born in Wilkes County,
North Carolina between 1772 and 1777.  Fourteen children were born to them and it is
known that at least eleven reached adulthood.   Their daughter *REBECCA  is our ancestor
though it is her brother, Josiah, that provides most of the information we know of the
family.

Josiah was a soldier in the American Revolution and when he applied to the government
for a pension, he proved who his parents, wife and children were.  Because Josiah had no
printed proof of his service or his discharge, it was necessary to testify in detail to prove
he had actually served. He stated that he entered the war in 1778 and  fought under the
commands of  Captain Lenoir, Colonel Cleveland, and Captain Keys at the battles of
Rainbow Mills, Kings Mountain and a shorter tour of service against the Indians in 1782.
He wrote the names of his children and other family on papers that appear to be a grocery
list or journal of sorts.  He crossed out orders for coffee, salt, bacon, ribbon, a hat, fabric,
powder, papers of pins, nails, and whiskey.  Josiah named his siblings and their dates of
birth and a few of their deaths.  He listed his 16 children and their dates of birth. One page
says "Salley Chandler (his wife) was born August 1762 and we was married 26th of
August 1784" .  "Robert Chandler (his father) was born the last day of August in the year of
our lord 1720. Partheney Chandler his wife was born the 27 day of November in the year
of our lord 1732 and dady dyed August the 26 day of 1805".  Josiah's wife was Sarah
Eddins, and his sister Rebecca married William Eddins, our ancestors.  Josiah also listed
in his papers notes on his wife's parents "Abraham Eddins was born June __1724 and he
died November the 30 day of 1801 and old mary died the 22 day of July 1786"
Josiah died October 22, 1827 and his wife petitioned to receive his pension of $20 per
year.  Testifying in her behalf were her brother *WILLIAM EDDINS and his wife
*REBECCA CHANDLER EDDINS.   Samples of the papers and transcriptions are
included in this chapter.

Josiah and Sarah's first two children were born in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1785
and 1786.  Their third through tenth children were born in Wattsville, Laurens County,
South Carolina by 1800 and in 1803 their eleventh child was born in Lebanon, Wilson
County, Tennessee and the sixteenth child born there in 1816.  The Eddins family also
lived in those places at those times so it is evident that the families migrated in unison.

Two Chandler lines, William of Roxbury MASS comes from Bishops-Stortford,
Hertfordshire, England (earliest ancestor 1475)- the other from Oare, Wiltshire, England,
probably our line (earliest ancestor Nicholas b.1540)  There does not appear to be a
common ancestor between the two lines.

Robert Chandler, Sr. born 1695, and his wife Elizabeth are our earliest Chandler
ancesters.  It is believed that they arrived in the Jamestown area of VA, and migrated up
the James River.
Robert Sr. and Elizabeth's son, also named Robert Chandler, was born in 1720 in Henry
County VA., as was his wife, Partheny.  Their first 8 children were also born in Henry Co
VA between 1751 to 1769 and the last three children were born in Wilkes Co, NC from
1772 to 1777. The family eventually made their way to SC, then western NC and TN.  The
Chandlers left VA  about 1769, arriving in Wilkes Co NC by 1772 , then moving to Lauren
Co SC from 1790 to 1802, and to Wilson Co TN before 1804. The dates were calculated
by the places of birth listed for their children.  It would appear that Revolutionary War
land grants brought them to the western areas of NC, then other grants leading them to SC.
These Chandlers followed the edges of the wilderness,  could not read or write and often
did not register births or marriages.

There is a wealth of Chandler information obtained from the Revolutionary War pension
application papers of Josiah Chandler.  Josiah is the son of Robert.  Josiah's sister is our
ancestor Rebecca who married William Eddins.  Josiah married Sarah Eddins, sister of
our William Eddins, two Chandler siblings married to two Eddins siblings. From Josiah
Chandler's Bible:  Abraham Eddins is listed as the father of our Eddins.  "Abraham Eddins
was born June 12, 1724 and he died November 11, 1805  and old Mary died the 22 day of
July 1786.      Robert Chandler was born the last day of August in the year of our lord
1720.  Partheny, his wife was born the 27 day of November in the year 1732 and dady (sic)
dyed August the 26, 1805"

D.A.R. file #705841  names 14 children and their spouses of Rebecca Chandler and
William Eddins.  The Latter-day Saints Ancestral File lists 13 children including their
dates and places of birth.  A list generated by descendants of Josiah Chandler furnished the
names of  11 children.
