Descendants of Thomas GILMORE

 1   Thomas GILMORE b: Abt. 1680 in Ulster, N. Ireland Thomas and his
      family emigrated from Ireland to the Pensylvania Colony about 1730, with
      a large group of Scots Irish (descendants of early Scotch Presbyterians who
      emigrated from Scotland to the Province of Ulster in northern Ireland).
      The Edict of Nantes had been revoked in 1685, resulting in the persecution of  Protestants.
      Some were put to death, others transported, and many fled to American colonies.

                            John was born in Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania in 1759, moved with his
                            family to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, then to Cumberland Co.
                            North Carolina.  From thence he removed to Wilkes Co. North Carolina.

              John fought in the American Revolution (Cert. #30588 issued 26 Apr
              1836).  He moved to Lincoln Co. Georgia.  He married Nancy Thomas,
              daughter of John Thomas of Georgia. They moved to Mississippi Territory
             (that portion that became Alabama) and first resided in Washington
             Co., then in Clarke Co., then in Wilcox Co., then settled in Marengo Co.
             Alabama.  His older children and their families moved to Tejas y Coahila
             28 Nov 1833.

                          James and his brother John were surveyors, and came to Tejas y Coahila
                          28 Oct 1833 with brother Thomas and his family. John returned to AL
                         and became a doctor.   James was a woodworker, making spinning
                         wheels,  looms, ox youkes and churns.
                         James and Mary were listed on the 1830 (and 1850 Census --- did they
                         go back for a visit, or to place the family out of harm's way during the
                         war?) for Marengo Co. AL.  They had moved to Montgomery Co. TX by
                         1855, when James applied for a military pension for his service in the War
                         of 1812, as a Private in Capt. Safford's Co. of Alabama Militia.
                         wittnesses were Appleton Gay (second husband of Nancy Gilmore) and R.
                         R. Bradley.  He received Pension # WC 25,836 and Bounty Land
                         40,215-160-55.

                        James died in 1858; Mary applied for his pension.  Wittnesses to her
                        application were J. N. Scott and J. F. Myers.  Mary was listed on the
                       1860 Montgomery Co. Census with Sina, Nancy, Frances, Delilah, and
                       Elizabeth, son-in-law W. G. Leach, grandchildren J., L., and S. Shipp.
                       Mary was listed on the 1880 Montgomery Co. Census with daughter
                       Delilah Jones, grandson James Jones, daughter Elizabeth Green, and
                       grandson  James Green.

John Gilmore (son of Thomas)fought in the American Revolution 
(Cert. #30588 issued 26 Apr1836).  
John stated that he served as Private in the fall of 1778 under
Capt. Joshua Guess (Guiss, Guest) as a substitute for John Cole, for
three months.  In the fall of 1779 he volunteered and served as a foot
soldier for three months as a fot soldier under Capt. Nathan King of the
2nd Regt. of North Carolina Militia, under Gen. arrington, from whom he
received a discharge.  On the day he received his discharge, he became a
substitute for Nathaniel Carruthers, for twelve days in the same Regt.
under Capt. Page.  Shortly afterward, he volunteered under Col. Robert
Roane and Maj. Winslow to act against the Tories in Cumberland Co., and served one month.  He served one month more against the Tories under Col. Phil. Alston, and about twelve days under Capt. Caster.  His last service was against the Tories, under Capt. Teal, for five days.
