Note that William Landrum was a witness on EVERY ONE of those
grants! The plot thickens with the following deeds I found:
"Montgomery County Deed Book B 10 Jan 1837
"$1,000 Contract between John Thomas & W. Landrum & J. Pyle.
Republic
of Texas, Lake Creek. John Thomas entitled to one league and
labor as
settler. Landrum and Pyle to select & survey land for ½
of land. /S/
John Thomas, Y.F.W. Johnson. Wit: J. Worsham, W. W. Rankin, Zacheus
Wilson & William Keys."
"Montgomery County Deed Book E 9 Dec 1837
"William Landrum of the county of Washington, and his wife, Nancy
Landrum, sells to John Thomas a tract of land situated in Washington
County for the sum of $200.00. The tract begins on the west side
of
the League granted to Landrum. Wit: W. W. Sheppard, William Gilmore."
"Montgomery County Deed Book E 10 Dec 1839
"Clinch Pilkinton … a tract on east side of Lake Creek. This
is part
of the Headright League of Wm. Landrum, transferred & sold by Wm.
Landrum and his wife, Mary [sic] Landrum, to John Thomas on 9 Dec
1837; Thomas sold to Clinch Pilkington on 6 Dec 1839 … tract contains
300 acres."
"Estate of William Landrum 11 Nov 1848
Died 13 (or 15) October 1848
Executors: Nancy Landrum, wife, and Green D. Gay, son-in-law
Inventory: 2357 acres in Montgomery Co. a part of the headright of
Wm.
Landrum's 800 acres in Montgomery Co., a part of T. Landrum's
headright; a title bond for 400 acres a part of headright of James
Rankin lying in Polk Co.; a title bond for 2302 acres part of the
headright of John Thomas lying in Robinson Co.; a title bond for 400
acres a part of headright of W. Bailey lying in Milam Co.; one note
on
E. G. Collier for $150.00; 3 notes on R. E. Pace; 15 slaves, 7 horses,
110 head of cattle, 7 head of sheep, 3 yoke of oxen, 1 wagon and 1
carry-all. Separate property of Mrs. Landrum's: three negroes."
Part of the mystery of the connection of the Landrums is found in the
will of Zachariah Landrum, dated 11 Jul 1833. The original is
in the
Probate Packets in the basement of the Montgomery County Courthouse
in
Conroe. It is stated that "Zachariah Landrum was one of two
Revolutionary Soldiers who died and are buried in Montgomery County,
Texas.
I'll try to abstract the critical parts:
"I, Zachariah Landrum of the jurisdiction of Austin in Texas...
"I give and bequeath unto my wife, Letitia Landrum all my estate ...
except as in herein after excepted...
"...the League of Land granted to me by the ... State of Coahuila &
Texas on which I now reside be equally divided... and that my son John
Landrum have his portion laid out on the North end of the said half
League.
"William M. Rankin the second lot adjoining John Landrums tract on
the
south side of this League.
"William Landrum the third lot adjoining William Rankins tract on the
south side thereof and Jeremiah Worsham the fourth lot...
"I will and bequeath unto JOHN SPRINGER a portion of land equal in
quantity with my other heirs...
"In witness I hereunto set my hand & seal the 11th day of Jul A.D.
1833
"Signed & Sealed in presence of: Raleigh Rogers, Thos. J. Smith,
Wm.
W. Ford, Mat. Hubert, EZEKIEL SPRINGER, Polly Ann Rogers, Jesse Grimes."
John Springer being an heir was probably married to the daughter of
Zachariah Landrum, and therefore the William Landrum in all the above
records, was probably his brother-in-law.
The Landrum family was there in Wilcox and Marengo Counties, Alabama
--
right with the Springers and Thomases. And I think I saw where
they went to
Georgia before that from Union County, SC!!!!
LANDRUM.. Elizabeth Landrum (b.1825 AL) married Joe John Wheeler (brother
to Amanda). She is the daughter of Joseph L Landrum and Mary BOON.
She named a son James Avery Wheeler and by the 1880 census, she and her
daughter Mary Ann and her father-in-law H H Wheeler, lived with Amanda.
Elizabeth's husband denied paternity of their daughter and declared his
wife insane. An Elizabeth Landrum married to John May Springer...

Vol. 7, #1, Spring 1984. AND
White, Gifford, 1840 Citizens of Texas, Vol. 3, Land Grants, pp. 280-281.
The transcript I found was in Montgomery County Genealogical
Society's publication, "The Herald," Vol. 11, #3, Fall 1988, pp. 159-160.
The "introduction" states:
"This will was found while abstracting the Probate Packets housed in
the basement of the Montgomery County Courthouse, Conroe, Texas.
This
will is very fragile, and is really a museum piece because Zachariah
Landrum was one of two Revolutionary Soldiers who died and are buried
in Montgomery County, Texas. This is the only document in the
packet."
Packet #612 -- LANDRUM, ZACHARIAH, deceased
Letitia Landurm, Executrix
"I, Zachariah Landrum of the jurisdiction of Austin in Texas being
sick and wishing to dispose of my worldly estate do make and ordain
the following as my last will and testament in manner and form as
follows, to wit:
"I give and bequeath unto my wife, Letitia Landrum all my estate both
real and personal except such as herein after excepted, to be disposed
of by her, at any time in such manner and upon such terms as she may
think proper to do so.
"It is my will and desire that the League of land granted to me by the
authorities of the State of Coahuila & Texas on which I now reside
be
equally divided by a line running North and South, and that the West
half thereof be divided into four equal divisions according to
quantity, and that my son John Landrum have his portion laid out on
the North end of the said half League.
"William M. Rankin the second lot adjoining John Landrums tract on the
south side this League.
"William Landrum the third lot adjoining William Rankins tract on the
south side thereof and Jeremiah Worsham the fourth lot on South end
of
the said half League of land, except he shall prefer the North end
of
the last half of my said League of Land in that case he shall have
a
quantity of land equal to that herein bequeathed to my other heirs
granted him of the North end of the East half of my said league of
Land.
"And my wife Letitia Landrum shall retain the lot or tract herein
before mentioned as intended for him on the south end of the West half
of my said League of land.
"I will and bequeath unto John Springer a portion of land equal in
quantity with my other heirs herein provided for to be laid out on
the
south end of the East half of my League in such manner as to include
his present residence and improvements, but not so as to include my
improvements whereon I now reside nor any part there of.
"I nominate and appoint my wife Letitia Landrum sole executrix of this
last will and testament.
"In witness I hereunto set my hand & seal the 11th day of Jul A.D.
1833.

"To James B. Miller first Constitutional Rigidor of said jurisdiction,
the petition of Letitia Landrum respectfully represents her husband
Zachariah Landrum died on the 19th of Jul last [1833], and leaving
a
will and herself as executrix the will she presents and prays that
it
may be admitted to record and that letters may be granted to her as
executrix.
Letitia /m/ Landrum
"Matthew Hubert and Ezekiel (?Alfried E.) Springer certify as to the
validity of the will, as they were witnesses to same."
This is the list of children for Zachariah Landrum and Letitia Tynes/Tines:
1) Sarah (b 1798) married William Marshall Rankin.
2) Catherine/Katherine (1799-1853) married Jeremiah Worsham.
3) John (b 1801) married Martha Curry and Mary Wells
4) William [says "see page 106", but I don't have 106]
5) Elizabeth married John May Springer.
There is not a Nancy listed...maybe Elizabeth was "Nancy Elizabeth". The book references a Power of Attorney given by John May Springer and wife Elizabeth to their son-in-law Franklin Goldstein Dupree.
The book says John M. and Elizabeth Springer had 8 children, but names
only 6.
[Maybe the 8 is a misprint for 6.]
1) Lydia (b 1826) married William Thomas
2) Canzada (b 1830) married Franklin G. Dupree
3) Ann (b 1833) married William C. Fowler
4) John May Jr. (1834-1862, died of measles/pneumonia in Civil War)
5) "Doc" (killed in Civil War)
6) Zachariah (killed in Civil War)
"Estate of William Landrum 11 Nov 1848

carryall. Separate property of Mrs. Landrum's: three negroes."
From the "History of Grimes County, Texas," page 312, under the
heading of "Gilmore/Thomas Family" I found more Landrums and Hensons,
this time married to the Gilmore family of Marengo County.
* Nancy (b. 1808, Alabama) m. William Landrum 24 Sep 1825
* Anny (b. 1812, Alabama) m. William Hinson 27 Dec 1829
The second marriage is confirmed from Marengo County Marriage Book A,
p. 208 (Pauline Jones Ganrud, Sourthern Historical Press, 1979, p.
16):
"William Hanson and Anna Gilmore, 21 Dec 1829, executed 22 Dec by
William Flucker, Thomas Gilmore, security."
[The same reference, by the way, includes the marriage of "William
Morris and Lucinda Thomas, 25 Jan 1830, executed 30 Jan, John Gilmore,
security;" and that of "Joseph Henson and Mary Thomas, 22 Jan 1829,
executed 22 Jan by John Gilmore, J.P., Thomas Gilmore, security."]
I haven't found the marriage record for William Landrum, but John
Gilmore's will [Marengo County Will Book A, p. 229 -- same published
reference, p. 41] dated 29 March 1841, probated January Term 1842,
names:
* son, James Gilmore
* son, John Gilmore
* daughter Elizabeth Robin
* son Thomas Gilmore
* daughter, NANCY LANDRUM
* son, William Gilmore
* daughter, Anny Henson

p. 31 William Landrum and Agnes SMITH 23 Jan 1801
William Landrum & Nancy Gilmore, 24 Sep 1825, John Landrum, security.
(author's note: "she was dau. of John, Rev. pensioner.")
John Thomas and William Landrum. The following proves that
the League of land granted to John Thomas was in Robertson County.
Clearly he "gave" one half of the League to William Landrum.
"Montgomery County Deed Book B 10 Jan 1837
"$1,000 Contract between John Thomas & W. Landrum & J. Pyle.

of Texas, Lake Creek. John Thomas entitled to one league and
labor as

John Thomas, Y.F.W. Johnson. Wit: J. Worsham, W. W. Rankin, Zacheus

Then from the abstracted estate record of William Landrum:
"Estate of William Landrum 11 Nov 1848
Died 13 (or 15) October 1848
Executors: Nancy Landrum, wife, and Green D. Gay, son-in-law
Inventory: 2357 acres in Montgomery Co. a part of the headright of
Wm.
Landrum's 800 acres in Mont-gomery Co., a part of T. Landrum's
headright; a title bond for 400 acres a part of headright of James
Rankin lying in Polk Co.; a title bond for 2302 acres part of the
headright of John Thomas lying in Robinson Co.; a title bond for 400
acres a part of headright of W. Bailey lying in Milam Co.; one note
on

And finally a full transcript of the record in Montgomery Deed Book
L,
pp. 410-411
