The   McCLANAHAN   Family

The McClanahan family has held a position of prominence among the earliest settlers of
Virginia, South Carolina and other places as they moved with the westward migration to
settle new territory.

It is difficult to pinpoint exact dates because  researchers vary as much as 50 years in the
dates of births.  To further confuse the statistics, each McClanahan family seemed to name
their children with the same given names and they often married their own cousins. Only
well-documented statistics are used in this chapter.

None of our  McClanahan ancestors are  listed as a passenger on any ship to the colonies
during the 17th and early 18th century.  It is possible they received passage as
super-cargoes, possibly with Captain John McClanahan of the Jamestown and Norfolk
records.

The settlement in Jamestown began in 1607 with 100 men.  In 1618, the population grew
from 400 souls to 1,000.  By 1624  4,000 more colonists arrived but a year later in 1625
the population numbered only 1,200. Some had returned to England but most being ill fed,
ill clothed and ill housed, sickened and died.  In 1622 the Indians rose up and killed 347.
Tobacco prices were high and though fortunes were made because of it's production,
newcomers were ruthlessly exploited during this time.

*THOMAS McCLANAHAN was born about 1616.  A book detailing his descendants says
that he was born in what later became Westmoreland County, Virginia. He certainly was
among the very earliest settlers in America, being here before the Mayflower docked at
Plymouth.  Thomas married *DOROTHY MOONEY who was born about 1620.  Their
family lived in Virginia's  Northumberland and Westmoreland Counties.  In 1683,
Thomas's will was probated and in the will  he bequeathed items to his wife, his son
*WILLIAM, and several daughters, unnamed.  It is believed that John McClanahan, is also
a child of Thomas and Dorothy.  The oldest son in a family was not always listed in  wills
since the laws of primogeniture recognize the him as the main heir.   In the court records of
Old Jamestown in 1673/74 is the following mention - "Our well beloved friend, John
McClanahan, of the city of Londonderry, Merchant, and Master of a vessell". During this
time, ships arrived and departed at a rapid rate bringing people and supplies and returning
to England and Ireland with tobacco cargoes.   Thomas and Dorothy must have been of an
upper class people since both could read and write, in a day when most could not. Thomas
was closely related to Nathaniel McClanahan, the shipping man of Princess Anne County,
Virginia who died in 1711, leaving an adult family and mentioning a brother, David, who
had died in Strabine, Ireland.  Strabine is located just below Londonderry.  After Thomas
died, Dorothy remarried a man named Duncan.

SARAH McCLANAHAN, daughter of Thomas and Dorothy, was born about 1644, married
John Williams. Her descendants have not been researched for this chapter.

JOHN McCLANAHAN, who is believed to be a son of Thomas and Dorothy, married
Agnes McChubit.  Their children were Elijah, Robert, John, Agnes, William, James, Ann,
Andrew, and Charles.  Elijah was married to Ann Ewing and they lived in a place named
Cowpasture, Virginia. Elijah and Ann's children were Mary, Margaret, William and a son
who was killed by Indians. Elijah's son, William, was wounded 13 times as a soldier of
the American Revolution at the battle of Cowpens and Buford's Defeat; William's son
Thomas was also a soldier. In 1780 William settled in Big Lick, now Roanoke, Virginia.
Elijah's daughter, Margaret married John Crockett and she was the grandmother of Davy
Crockett.  It is said that Davy Crockett weighed 200 pounds at age 8 with his feet clean and
his stomach empty. Davy was an Indian fighter, a congressman, a sportsman of great
ledgend and he died defending the Alamo.   Davy Crockett would be 3rd cousin, 6 times
removed from the grandchildren of Susie Cornelia Thomas Sandel, the author's
grandmother.

*WILLIAM McCLANAHAN (1) [Thomas (1)], was born in Westmoreland County,
Virginia.  He married *MARTHA SMITH, daughter of *PETER SMITH.   Early records
state "their son (Thomas and Dorothy's), William, married into a prominent Smith family,
and their grandsons married well."  The date of Martha and William's birth cannot be
pinpointed from the estimates given by other researchers.  The only dates that can be
certain are the dates their wills were written and entered into probate proceedings.
William and Martha's children were Thomas, *Peter, William, James, Martha and John.
All were born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, probably between 1721 and 1740.

*PETER McCLANAHAN (1)[Thomas (1) , William(1)],  was born 1734 or 1735 in Cople
Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia.  He is the third son named in his father's will.
Peter married a woman named Bayley.  Peter had at least 7 children A Montrose,
Westmoreland County deed dated October 1765 shows that John Bayley and his wife
Elizabeth of Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, sold Peter McClanahan, same parish and
county, for 75 pounds current money of Virginia, 75 acres, more or less, joining the right
honorable Robert Carter, Esq., with all rights and privileges, titles, etc. Witnesses to the
deed were James Bayley, William Flemming and John McClanahan.

Deed Book 6, page 71, Richmond County, Virginia:
Robert Carter of North Farnum Parish, Richmond County, leases Peter McClanahan, sd
county, one tract of land whereon the said McClanahan lives, containing 250 acres situate
and lying in the county afsd., joining the land of Forrester, corner to Robert Pritchett and
John Booth unto Peter McClanahan and his heirs, forever, until the end of fourteen years, sd
McClanahan paying and yielding 1,000 pounds of crop tobacco in cash June first, yearly.
McClanahan to plant apple and peach trees, etc.
Witnesses:  Thomas Edwards, Thaddeus Jackson

The will of Peter McClanahan is found in Deed Book 16, page 51:
"In the name of God, I, Peter McClanahan of the County of Westmoreland, Parish of Cople,
being sick and weak, do devise in the manner and form following, viz:
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son, William McClanahan, all my land and one negro
cald {sic} Daniel, to him and his heirs of his body lawfully begotten, and if he should have
no heirs, to return to the next heir and to the rest of my six children I do give and bequeathe
all my estate not mentioned, both real and personal, to be equally divided between Peter
McClanahan, Thomas McClanahan, James McClanahan, Mary McClanahan, Betty
McClanahan, and John McClanahan, and I do appoint my son, William McClanahan, and
my son, Thomas McClanahan, and my son, Peter McClanahan, my whole and sole extrs. of
this my last will and testament, revoking all other wills heretofore made, declaring this to
be my last will and testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this
19th day of January, one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five.
Peter McClanahan, L.S. (legal signature)
Wits: David Crenshaw, George Custis, John McClanahan"

During this time the British Fleet was ravaging the countryside.

JOHN McCLANAHAN, son of Peter (1), was born about 1769 in Cople Parish. He died
29 April 1847 in Winston County, Mississippi. He married  MARY ROBINSON, daughter
of Solomon Robinson. She died about 1840. Both are buried in Baptist Cemetery,
Louisville, Mississippi.  John & Mary's children were Hannah R. who married Joseph
Barron, Peter R. who married Sarah McKenzie, Kesiah R. who married Lacy Hunt,
Solomon R. who married Rebecca, Nancy F. who married William Holbert, James who
married Louisa McGowan, and Elizabeth who married Abram Humphries.

John was a soldier of the Virginia Line in the Revolutionary War.    On 27 December 1791,
Solomon Robinson gave consent for his daughter Mary's  marriage to John. Solomon's will
was presented in court 26 August 1799 and it was witnessed by William Hutt, John
McClanahan, and William Edwards.  In 1796, John administered the estate of Magdalene
McClanahan, deceased, and together with Solomon Robinson and Thomas Hutt, their
securities, entered into a bond in the sum of $1,500 for obtaining letters of administration
of the said estate in due form.

closest neighbors and friends were William Hutt, John McClanahan, Thomas and William

Elizabeth Barnes. He was an attorney.

PETER McCLANAHAN (2) [Thomas (1), Willaim (1), Peter (1)], left the following will

REV. WILLIAM McCLANAHAN (2) [Thomas (1), William (1),  Peter (1)],  married
Mary Marshall who was born about 1738. They married about 1758. William was a
baptist minister. Mary was from Germantown, Fauquier County, Virginia.  Mary was the
sister of Justice John Marshall, Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court from 1801 - 1835.
William and Mary lived in Westmoreland County, Virginia in their early years as their
oldest son, Thomas was born there.  At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, the
McClanahan family was living in Culpepper County, Virginia. Sometime towards the close
of the century, Mr. McClanahan moved to Greenville, South Carolina where he died.  Their
children were THOMAS who died in Bourbon County, Kentucky, leaving issue; WILLIAM
who died in Fayette County leaving a daughter, Ann, who married first a Robinson, and
second, Marshall McClanahan (her cousin); JOHN who moved from Greenville, South
Carolina to Versailles, Morgan County, Missouri. He died at age 45 from an outbreak of
cholera at Ft. Laramie; NANCY married Elzimond Basye of Bourbon County, Kentucky

*MARY ANN McCLANAHAN [Thomas (1), William (2), Peter(1)] married THOMAS
EDWARDS III in Culpepper County, Virginia. Thomas served as a Private in the South
Carolina troops during the Revolutionary War. The Daughters Of The American
Revolution list his birth as 1741 and death as taking place in 1832.
The Edwards family and McClanahan family were friends and neighbors for several
generations.  When Edwards removed to South Carolina, John McClanahan also moved
there. The EDWARDS family is detailed in another chapter.

Research of the McClanahan name reveals that it is to be found among those of the early
settlers of Virginia. In 1681, Thomas McClanahan willed to his wife, Dorothy, in
Northumberland County.  In 1683 it was recorded, leaving a son, William and perhaps
several daughters, unnamed. Thomas and Dorothy must have been of an upper class of
people, since both could read and write, in a day when most could not. Early records state
that "their son, William, married into a prominent Smith family, and Thomas's grandsons
married well."  Thomas was closely related to Nathaniel McClanahan, the shipping man of
Princess Anne County, Virginia who died in 1711, leaving an adult family and mentioning a
brother, David, who had died in Strabine, Ireland.  There was a Captain John McClanahan
who appeared in the court records of Old Jamestown in 1673/4 "Our well beloved friend,
John McClanahan, of the city of Londonderry, Merchant, and Master of a vessel".  Strabine
is just below Londonderry.
