THE MULLENS FAMILY
*WILLIAM THOMAS MULLENS was born 17 Mar 1765, probably in Virginia, the place
of his birth and his parents are unknown. In about 1781 he married *SALLIE POTTS in
Virginia. Sallie was born about 1763 and her parents and place of birth are also unknown.
William served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the Virginia line. He served under
Captain Owen Ruble, Henry County Virginia Militia. William also stated in his pension
application that he ranged the frontier in Washington County guarding the frontier against
the British troops and the Indians. The frontier was the land west of Virginia. William and
Sallie moved their family from Washington County, Virginia to Powell's Valley. By 1806
they were in Wayne County, Kentucky where their son James was married. Other Mullens
families lived near them in Kentucky. Listed in the history of Wayne County are several
births, marriages, deaths, mentions of slave transactions of Will Mullens and other Mullen
names. By 1837 the family lived in Newberg, Franklin County, Alabama. Sallie died in
1837 and William in 1851, both in NewbergAccording to application papers filed with the United States Daughters of the American
Revolution, William and Sallie had the following children:
*JAMES b. 16 Sep 1785 VA, m. Rebecca Smith 07 Nov 1806 at Wayne Co, KY Clementine m. Mallard (or Mallerp) Jones Rebecca b. 1794 Joshua Sallie Marinda m. Brantly Sugg Jane (Jenny) m. Jesse Yocum (Dick Yokum) 1814 at Wayne Co., KY Margaret m. Bolling Thomas m. Charity Couch 1814 at Madison Co., MS Isaac m. Jane Priest Gabriel m. Permia Jarman Nancy m. James Smith *JAMES MULLENS was born 16 Sep 1785 in Virginia. His marriage to *Rebecca Smith
on 07 Nov 1806 is recorded in Wayne County, located in Kentucky on the southern border. Surety for the marriage ceremony was Matthew Smith, probably a brother of Rebecca. Rebecca's father was Mathew Simpson Smith and Sallie Wallace. He served in the Revolutionay War.The family moved from Kentucky to Alabama. James and Rebecca had several children. In the 1830 Alabama Census for Madison County in the northern part of the state, there is a son listed aged 15 to 20, 3 daughters aged 10 to 15, and a daughter aged 15 to 20. The son is *Matthew who was 18 years old at the time of the 1830 census. One of the daughters was Rachel who married Thomas Sugg. The other three daughters have not yet been identified. James and Rebecca died in Alabama. Some of the censuses that would list them were destroyed during the Civil War.

for Matthew's ancestry, the name Simpson was explored and it was found that the Simpson
families in Wayne County, Kentucky were closely allied with the Mullens families through
marriage and neighboring farm ownership. Matthew was named for Matthew Simpson Smith
his grandfather, Rebecca's father. Matthew Mullens married first Margaret
Simonton and together they had six children. A son, William was born in Alabama and the
last child, Sarah, was born in Texas. Matthew and Margaret's children lived with their
grandparents, James and Rebecca, in Alabama. Matthew was a Justice of the Peace in
Tuscaloosa and his signature appears on several marriage documents still on file there. It
is believed that Matthew first arrived in Texas in St. Augustine County and was granted
land after that in Cass County at the town of Old Courtland. His parcel was located 10
miles from the Arkansas border, 6 miles south of Bowie County. Nearby were several
properties granted to Peter Edwards, Matthew's father-in-law. Also nearby were
properties of McAdams who later married Matthew's daughter Rebecca. On 20 Apr 1846
Matthew married *Mary Ann McClanahan Edwards. She was born in 1822 at Greenville,
South Carolina, the daughter of Peter Edwards and Mary Polly Salmon. Matthew appears
on the 1850 and 1860 Texas census in Cass County. He died in 1866, possibly from an
outbreak of disease that swept the town that year. Matthew and Mary Ann Edwards Mullens
moved to Walker County, Texas with 4 of their daughters, the other one, Cornelia, already
married and living in the area. Matthew and Mary Ann's children were:A. CORNELIA MULLENS was born 18 Mar 1847. In 1866 she married William G.

who is also the grandfather to Francis Marion Thomas who married Mary Ann's sister

Jul 1937 and is buried at Navasota, Texas. Mary Ann and James' children were:
