SMITH     FAMILY

by Charlotte Sandel Beck

Let me start out this SMITH family history with a little explanation.  When I found the SMITH surname in our family tree, I set out to trace it.  After a few minutes looking at SMITH names in Tennessee, I completely gave up the search. The sheer number of SMITHs made it impossible without more information to go on.  While I was in Washington, D.C. researching at the Daughters of the American Revolution Library in August 2000,  I requested a film about our Matthew Simpson Mullens (who's mother was Rebecca Smith) and the film I received seemed to be in error.  It was information about Matthew Simpson SMITH.  Then the name Rebecca Smith Mullens jumped out at me from the film reader !!  Holy Smokes!  She was the daughter of Matthew Simpson SMITH !! It proves there is no substitute for dumb luck !  Not only was her father listed on the papers which were filed in 1924 and 1926, but several generations earlier were listed as well.  You should know that the D.A.R. requires proof of all marriage, birth and deaths for individual lineages so until I get a closer look at the data submitted, you can be pretty sure that the following information is accurate.  This chapter will contain information found in those D.A.R. member papers.

Matthew Simpson Smith was born  21 February, 1750 in Londonderry, Ireland.  His place of residence during the Revolutionary War was near Charleston, South Carolina.  He died near Leighton, Laurence County, Alabama in 1816.

Matthew Smith was commissioned a Lieutenant, 2nd Grade, on 22 January, 1776.  He was promoted to Quartermaster on August 15, 1777, serving in Captain Crump's Company , 1st Virginia.  2nd Regiment Colonel Isaac Reed, commanding.

Matthew married Sarah Wallace in South Carolina about 1771.  Their children were
Mary       m. Henry Miller
Rebecca  b. 23 July 1786 m. James Mullens
Jenny      m. Gared Brandon
James      b. 07 Aug 1792, m. Nancy Mullens
Robert    died young

There is more information contained in the MULLENS chapter.

The father of James Mullens, William Thomas Mullens was also a Revolutionary War soldier.  He moved with his family to Wayne County Kentucky and then to Alabama where he died.  It appears that the Smith family also settled on bounty land after the Revolutionary War in TN and then moved to AL as did the Mullens family.
