This document is more of a worksheet or work-in-progress than it is a family history since
there has been no actual proof of our SPRINGER lineage, just a series of unproved
coincidences.  They may gel together after some intensive research, however,

There were several SPRINGER and THOMAS families in Warren County, Georgia before
1800.

*PHOEBE SPRINGER, sometimes spelled Pheobe and Phebe, first appears with her
husband *JOHN THOMAS on a deed dated 1799 in Warren County, Georgia.

PHOEBE SPRINGER is next mentioned by name when she and her husband arrive in the
Mexican territory of Texas in 1835 to join Stephen F. Austin's colony.  Both she and John
list their ages as 50, making them born in either 1784 or 1785. Included in their family are
6 male and 2 female children.  Phoebe and John had 13 children and it appears the six
youngest accompanied them to Texas Territory, the 5 older girls being married.    Those
could be *James (23), John Nelson (20), David (19), Samuel A. J. (12), William (10),
Simeon (8), Annie (14), and Selvania (16).  The state that they lived in before arriving
was Alabama.

Traveling with them are several families, all from Alabama and all seeking land together in
the San Jacinto District.   One family is that of William Morris, widower with a female
child.  John and Phoebe's daughter Lucinda was his wife, so he is related as a son-in-law
with their granddaughter.

Also in the group is John Springer (27) and his wife Elizabeth (22), with 1 male and 2
female children.

Another family is Ezekiel Springer (21) and Erises Springer(21).

The Springer families are undoubtedly related to Phoebe.  There are several possibilities.
The younger Springers may be nieces or nephews.  Another scenario is that Phoebe was
not born a Springer, but married one, John could be her second husband and the above
Springers are her children from a previous marriage.    Phoebe's age would make her a
candidate as their mother.

*James Avery Thomas gave his place of birth as Marengo County, Alabama in the year
1812 so that means his father was also there.  In the book MARENGO COUNTY
MARRIAGES 1818-1860, there is the following:
John Thomas married  ______  09 Dec 1825, Bond Thomas Gilmore.

While the wife is not named, it is obvious that  either John remarried, or there was another
John in the family.   The bondsman was Thomas Gilmore, another Gilmore/Thomas
connection,  strengthening the probability that this is our ancestor John Thomas.  (See the
Thomas chapter).  Thomas Gilmore and his wife Carolyn Hill had among their children
daughters, Mary Ann, born in 1832 in Marengo County and Sarah Gilmore who married
Simeon Thomas, son of John and Phoebe, in Texas.

If this is a second marriage for Phoebe, it could mean that the Springer in Warren County
was her spouse rather than father.  The inconsistency of this theory is the Warren County,
Georgia dated 1799 that names "John Thomas and Phoebe, his wife".

Reverend John Springer (1744-1798) lived in Wilkes County, Georgia which adjoins
Warren County.  He married three times, the first time to his cousin Susanna Springer.  In
his will he does not name all his children but he does name Lucinda.  Notice that Pheobe
named a daughter Lucinda.

Marengo County, Alabama was formed in 1818 and from the Choctaw Session of 1819,
part was divided to form Green County.  The family of Job Springer was in Green County.
Job had a son, John born 1785 in Warren County, Georgia, and John Springer had a son
Elisha born 1819 in Marengo County.

In the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, *John Thomas, David Thomas and David Springer drew
land in Warren County.  It is a theory that the two Thomas' are related because they settled
near each other in Texas.  David named one of his sons John Springer Thomas.

Here is a good example that no matter how strong the clues are, conclusions cannot be
drawn without proof.
