The surname Valliant and its variant spellings is rare throughout the history of America.
Only a few families with that name have ever been recorded.  There was a family branch in
the late 1700's that settled in Maryland and one (Ansel Valliant) family in North Carolina.  Other Valliant names apear even earlier in the American Colonies.

Robert Spencer Valliant was born in 1772 in Dorchester County, Md.  He died in 1848 at Obion County, Tennessee.  He married Martha Hurlock, , believed to be the daughter of Jonathan Hurlock and Sarah Thomas, tholough this is not conclusively proven.  Sarah was the daughter of Simon Thomas and Sarah (?)

Closer examination of the Valliant family in Dorchester County, Maryland shows that
Robert Spencer Valliant was born in Dorchester County in 1772.  He was married to
Martha Hurlock.  By 1809 he had moved to land near the present city of Huntsville,
Alabama in Madison County, where Vashti and her siblings were married.  In about 1830
Robert moved to Obion County, Tennessee.  He signed a petition in Jackson County
concerning Constitutional limits.  Obion County was formed in 1810 from Haywood and
Jackson counties.  Robert died in 1848.
 

*VASHTI VALIANT was born in 1803 and her listed  State of nativity is North Carolina.
  Vashti and her siblings were married within a few years of each other near Huntsville, Alabama in Madison County.  Vashti married  Richard S. Brooks on 20 April 1824.

In the 1840 and 1850 Tennessee censuses, Richard S. Brooks and Vashti Valiant Brooks were living with their family in  Haywood Co. which neighbors Obion Co., where her father lived..   They moved to Texas in 1852.
.  Though there is no record of Robert Spencer Valliant in North Carolina, it could be possible that he was there briefly. Richard and Vashti's oldest daughter, Serena, is listed on a census as born in GA.

Another of Vashti's grandsons thought she was from Kent, England.  It is possible that he mistook "Kent", an early abbreviation for "Kentucky" to mean Kent, England.  There were many Valiant names from Kent, but without her direct family line being established, it would be impossible to find her English ancestors.
