July 1, 1998: Saskatoon, Canada: Saskatchewan Palace
Fan Review

On July 1, 1998, at 7:30 pm, Savage Garden made their
way to the little town of Saskatoon Saskatchewan. It was a great
way to spend a Canada Day evening. The wait was long, and the background
music was corny, but finally Savage Garden emerged in a blast of sound
and color. Their first song, "Tears Of Pearls" was energetic, and had the
crowds on their feet in no time, myself included. The entire concert
was upbeat, including the slower songs. Darren Hayes, the lead singer,
managed to throw a few lines of his favorite Sarah Mc Lachlan's songs into
the performance. In fact, many other songs by various groups could
be heard a Saskatchewan Place that night. Besides Sarah Mc Lachlan
out takes, Joan Osborne's song "One Of Us" was played, and they even managed
to throw in an out take of "Spice Up Your Life" by the Spice Girls. Savage
Garden sang every song from their self-titled album, as well as many others
I have never heard before. I loved them all. The band consisted
of Darren and Daniel, of course, and a bass guitarist, an electric guitarist,
a drummer, and two backup singers. The lighting was excellent with
funky spotlights, disco balls, and even Christmas lights. The sound was
also perfect. Not too loud, but loud enough. The antics of Darren
kept the audience thoroughly entertained. From speaking "Canadian" to acting
like Austin Powers, his wit and charm made concert even more enjoyable,
eh? If the spotlight ever left him, he would shout out, "It's my
show!!!" and run to where the spotlight was. Truly, it was his show,
and Daniel and the others took to the background. Finally, after singing
every song from their CD but one, they decided it was time to go.
As usual, we did not want the night to end, so we stood on our feet until
Savage Garden came out for their encore. It was the song we had all been
waiting for: "Truly Madly Deeply". The lights were soft, the
sound was mellow, and the mood was set. It was beautifully done,
as the whole concert was. It was a night I am sure all of us will
remember for a lifetime.
