Well, there's not too much left to say.... The
setlist in Dortmund was the same as the other gigs. I want to spend some
time here talking about Miller Anderson, who opened the show, as always,
with "Pictured Within". And, as always, he did a great job. During the first
twenty minutes of the gig, people were still coming in, trying to find their
seats or walking around, so the whole atmosphere was rather noisy. I
had seen that happen at other gigs, but Dortmund was the worst. Miller was
pretty much ignored and I felt so sorry for him because he was singing
beautifully. It must have hurt him as well because he even felt the need
to make a remark on stage that this was a beautiful song and it was a pity
that nobody was listening. Yes, what a shame !
I thought "damn, why are these idiots coming in half an hour late
for the show ?" Thinking about it later, I figured the reason for this
"misunderstanding" was the mispromotion on this tour. |
| The gigs were announced "Deep Purple and special guests".
That usually means that there is an opening act. And, especially in case
of recent DP gigs in Germany, if they're not "named" they usually suck. So,
lots of people assumed that there was a warm-up band which they didn't
necessarily want to see, so they came in late and destroyed the beginning
of the show. Somebody should have "told" them on the ads that the special
guests were included in the DP show. Well, enough of that, but I wanted
to mention it because it was a big time bummer, especially here in
Dortmund. |

| Let me now give you some pictures of the gig, taken by
Ahmed and me, before I drop some more remarks about the show. |

A lousy picture here, I know.
I was already on the way out, therefore miles away. It shows Ian conducting
the crowd.
He often took over Paul's conducting podium during the encore. I think
he picked up this habit in Frankfurt (at least I don't remember him doing
it in Straßburg) and he really enjoyed himself in that position...
Well, it worked with the audience, they responded very well. |
|
| My bottom line about this gig is: it was another great show of both
band and orchestra. The orchestra got better from gig to gig anyway. Also,
the sound was great I must say, although I heard different opinions regarding
that. I don't know what the reason is, I don't know where the folks saying
that were sitting, at least from where I was it sounded perfect.
But, and I can't help saying it, the audience was the worst so far.
Not only did they destroy the beginning, but also there was a bunch of drunken
idiots yelling through the quiet parts again. I was so happy that we didn't
have them at the other gigs, surprisingly not even in Frankfurt, but here
they were again ! I learned from Jon that this happened before, especially
in Sweden, Prague and South America, and I was so proud that German audiences
seemed to have more understanding for the music. Well, not in Dortmund though.
I admit I had a hard time keeping my positive attitude and enjoying
the show, not allowing these idiots to ruin my mood. Tough enough, I tell
you. I have the biggest respect for the musicians, continuing to play and
just ignoring them, although it must have hurt them to their bones. |
