KeySpan Remote
This remote allows you to control your computer reproducing keystrokes and work as your mouse on the computer with a push button on the remote control. This way you can sit on your couch and change the volume or fast forward, pause, play, stop, or whatever else you can do with a keystroke without moving from your butt groove on the couch.
My KeySpan remote came in and works like a charm. Anywhere in my room, 25x21 (approx) it works. Shooting it at the ceiling or floor also works. At an angle of up to I would say 200*, so even a shot slightly behind it works. you can bounce the signal off walls, corners, windows, your self, and it works. The remote works for about 35 Feet (according to the manual). The USB cord that goes to the receiver is detachable so if you need the receiver in a spot that is not near the computer you can do it easily. You get a 2 foot cord with it, I up'd it to a 3 foot cord.
The software is a breeze to setup. Very good job on the program! Setup too was a breeze, just installed the software (like 10 seconds!) then plug in the very nice looking base. With the software you can input all the need keystrokes per program. Many programs have already been inputted, just select your program, select the button on the remote and then type in the keystroke it should do. It even has some preset keystrokes for popular programs and it will automatically use the presets from any program that has the hotkey info in their help file, that has been the case with me.
Next, start doing some remote computing. I later setup MediaJukebox to work with the remote, but as of yet all I can get it to do it change the volume. All other programs work fine but there seems to be a problem with MJ... Ohwell, I know it works cause a contact on the net told me it worked for him.
The remote is very well made, buttons are easily pushed but not too easily, no fast-forwarding when you don't want to. There are 17 buttons on the remote control (the picture above is of the original 15 button model), all placed very well, even fat fingered people can handle this baby! It is very sturdy, not flimsy, crackling, keys don't stick, and the battery door is VERY secure which consists of two nickel sized SONY watch batteries.
The base has a red LED inside that tells you that it is responding with the remote, flashes when you press a key, solid when there is an error. It is also the base holder for the remote when you want to set it down somewhere where you wont forget where it is. It has comes in handy, only lost it once being so small.
Everything is the perfect size. It is the same thickness as a CD case.. maybe thinner. it is about 1.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches long. The base is somewhat egg-shaped and has a very large IR receiver window on the front. Four grip pads keep it from sliding around and uses your USB for power.
Overall, a great purchase. The only thing I think they should improve is a heavier base (the base has rubber grips but would like it to weigh some more to be really secure).
I HIGHLY recommend this product, the KeySpan Digital Media Remote. My total at Harmonycomputers.com was $42 including shipping and no tax!
