The Current Situation
The current situation is scary to look at with the well trained eye, while I see the robots of our media based society gather their money and go off to buy a new console, for them selves, or their kids, I almost feel like crying, because it's that disturbing. I must admit that allot of the younger demographics (ages 18-26) seem to be doing well in seeing through the lies of advertising, and are buying what they want with conviction and loyalty. It's the adults that aren't paying attention. We'll get into specifics later, but for now we'll leave it at that. Buying a new system is like buying a new world. What ever console you buy there is a world inside of it, contained in each and every one of those games. The console acts like the planet itself, but not all planets are equal, and the console wars is proving that more right by the min!
The "Digital Gaming in America Survey" which stated that 42% of gamers plan on buying at least one next-generation console. Of that 42%, 61% ( about 3 out of 5 ) would chose PS2 because of it's market leadership, loyalty to Sony, and for game variety. 34% chose X Box for it's internet access, technology, speed , and power. 33% ( also called last place ) chose GameCube for it's kids games, franchises, and adventure games.
In a forecast of game sales by DFC Intelligence, analysts predict 60 million 128-bit ( Next Gen)
Consoles in North America by 2005, and Sony's claimed 5 million in America ( 15 million world wide) BEFORE GameCube and X Box have even launched. The really funny thing is that PS2 has about 6 times as many games on store shelves then the other systems do, and the majority are PS2 exclusives!!!!!
In Japan Nintendos HOME country, the GameCube didn't even sell well. The 1st week sales as recorded by the "Weekly Famitsu" ( a Japanese video game mag) were sub par reaching only 133, 719 on the week of 9/14/2001. To get a perspective of things here are PS2's 1st week sales, ( also taken from "Weekly Famitsu") 630, 552 on the week of 3/4/2000. Why the poor sales for Nintendo? I think it's because the people are already satisfied with PS2. They don't need a $200 paper weight, do you?
