The Floating Castle

by Craig Mills

Alexander encounters a storm on his way home to Castle Daventry. For a moment he seems to see a castle in the dark clouds but soon dismisses the thought to be his imagination. He goes home and retires for the night. He wakes up and learns about what's going on. A castle has landed near Daventry and knights coming from it are disrupting peace and order in the kingdom. His father,King Graham, has already called for a meeting with his knights. This meeting however comes to a stop when three men barge in. One of them introduces himself as Telgrin, the wizard who owns the castle,. He has come to claim Daventry for his own. When King Graham refuses to surrender,Telgrin raises his staff and King Graham falls to the floor. Valanice and Alexander are speechless and no one in the room was able to stop the evil wizard and his 2 minions from getting away. The castle physician tries to cure King Graham but says that the case is beyond his power for it is the work of magic. Valanice sends Alexander to go to the wizard Morowyn for he's the only one they know who can do anything about the situation. Alexander quickly sets off. He gets to Morrowyn's residence only to find out that Morowyn can't help for he turned himself to a tree so that he can live eternally. What he does however is to introduce Alex to his apprentice,Cyril, whom he assigns to help Alex. They return to Castle Daventry. After checking on King Graham,Cyril concludes that Telgrin took King Graham's soul and that the only way to cure him is to return his soul. Alex and Cyril leave for Telgrin's castle. As night arrives they set camp. Cyril falls asleep while Alex on the other hand is kept awake by strange music. The music leads him to fairies who present him with a gift that will aid him in his quest. Their gift is a bag that is always filled with bread no matter what. Morning comes and the 2 continue their journey. On the way to the castle they encounter a troll who is guarding a wagon for the black nights. After giving him the bag from the fairies,Alex is able to convince him to leave his post. Alex and Cyril hide in the wagon and wait for the knights. Sure enough the knights arrive and the 2 are able to leave the wagon already inside Telgrin's Castle. All they were able to do was look around a little bit before they got captured. Not knowing their reason for coming Telgrin slips by assuming they're there on an amorous attempt at the Princess Lydia. Alex corrects him and they are sent to the dungeons in order to be fed to a hideous beast. Cyril is able to conjure magic that destroys the beast. Finding this taxing Cyril falls asleep. Alex ventures to a corridor opened by the fireball. Here he meets a headless man who is called King Owen. He reveals that he once owned the castle until he was betrayed by his apprentice named Telgrin. Fortunately for him he knew enough magic to keep him alive even with his head separated from his body. He agrees to help Alex provided that he returns a magical staff to Owen. Alex agrees. He tells Alex about three magical mirrors in the castle and that if you enter one you can go out the other in a different place. After informing Alex where they can be found,he tells him the way out the dungeon. Alex and Cyril head for the mirror located in the keep. Alex is able to see the room where his father's soul is kept just before they are once again found. Being cornered Cyril flies them to safety and becomes unconscious. Realizing that they are once again out of the castle,Alex tries to find away to get back in. He meets a witch named Sinofas who turns him into a frog to make it easier to enter the castle. To return to normal, all he has to do is get a kiss from a princess. Cyril brings him near the castle and then he sets forth on his own. He makes his way to Lydia's place and is lucky enough to be able to get a kiss from her. He explains to her what his purpose is and she agrees to help him. She distracts her caretaker and brings Alex to one of the mirrors. Alex is now able to take the sphere containing Graham's soul and Telgrin's staff. He and Lydia go to the dungeon. Alex instructs Lydia to stay behind. He then gives Owen his staff back while Owen tells him to take Lydia away from the castle. He tells Alex that before they leave he must remove a golden pin in order that the castle can never land again. On their way out Alex and Lydia are confronted by Telgrin. Owen fights Telgrin and Alex is able to remove the pin. They witness Owner's victory in turning Telgrin back into an 11-year old as the castle starts floating once again. Through Cyril's help they are able to depart the castle. They take horses back to Castle Daventry and there Cyril returns Graham's soul to his body. One summer morning Alex visits Morowyn and sees Cyril and Lydia enjoying themselves. All is well and Alex is joyful that he was successful in his task.
