Whether it's black or white, painted or sprayed, all models will benefit from an undercoat. It doesn't really matter if you use black or white, and each has its advantages. Black undercoats allow you to easily shade and add black lining to your models. Areas you miss, on purpose or by accident will not show up as much as they would with a white one. White can also be useful as colours painted over white will appear brighter. The finish is always smooth and even, so it is easier to paint over and work with. I recommend using spray, but similar effects can be achieved using spray, if you keep your paint thin and even.
