Where you could just drybrush metal, it's worth mentioning here about actually painting areas of metal instead. Either way has it's advantages and are equally effective in the right circumstances. There are areas that should be drybrushed and others that should be painted to gain the best effects. Also always paint metal over a black undercoat. If you undercoated the model white, paint the metal areas black before painting them metal. This is because the metallic paints do not show up well over a white undercoat.
Drybrushing It
When drybrushing metal, use either bolt gun metal or chainmail. You could if you wanted then lightly drybrush a highlight of Mythril Silver over this. Areas such as chainmail armour, Chains, Mesh etc. deserve to be drybrushed.

Painting It
When painting metal, use watered down paint and give it a couple of coats. Then, to give it a shade, paint black ink over it. This will make it appear more effective and not just flat. Areas such as armour plates, helmets, guns etc. deserve to be painted.

The metal areas of this space marine have been painted on and then given a black ink wash as shade.
