We've all seen it. You know who you are.
Nearly everybody does it when they start painting their first ever miniatures (I did!). You hear things like "I'm going to paint this model completely silver!", "I'm going to create my own chapter of space marines and paint the brown!?". This is fortunately just a phase (usually). This section is there to help you choose what colours to use on your army to make it appear realistic and good.
Colours
The only guidelines really when choosing colours are 'contrasting colours' and 'sensible colours'. Contrasting colours work well next to each other on the battlefield. Red with white, reds with greens etc. Also, the sensible part, ask yourself "Does it look like that army or trooper would actually wear those colours in real life". If it is lizardmen you are collecting for example. They would be painted natural colours such as greens, yellows and browns. You wouldn't expect to see a pink marine with bright yellow spots.

So, the best thing to do is just ask yourself "does it look right?" and if it does it'll probably be ok. It doesn't take a genius to work out a colour scheme that looks good, and it only takes a few minutes before you can actually get stuck in and start painting.
The Blue and Green on this wizard works well as a colour scheme, that I have tried to keep to when painting my Dogs of War army.
