Highlighting is a very simple and basic technique, but one that many people struggle with. It is basically adding lighter colours to the raised areas of the base colour.
Highlighting 1.
Firstly, once you have painted an area with the base coat, mix in your pallete a small amount of a lighter colour with the base colour (see the colour chart for advice on which colours to highlight each colour with). Paint this first shade onto the raised areas of the model, where natural light would fall.

Highlighting 2.
Once you have painted on the first highlight, you can mix a little more of the lighter colour to create an even lighter shade. Paint this shade onto the raised areas of the model, but a little thinner than the last highlight. Keep repeating this process getting progressively lighter and thinner highlights.

The more shades you use when highlighting, the smoother the blend between the lightest highlight and base colour. If you water down your paint you will find it easier to highlight the model. This can be time consuming but it is worth it when you have achieve the final result.
