What follows is a guide for painting Undead Warmaster. It is very detailed and long so if you want you can view a printable version here.
Undead
This is how I painted the models in my army, and so not all Undead units are included (because i haven't got them yet!) most of the techniques can be used for the other units, and as my collection grows i will add them here. If you want to know how I would go about painting any units not included here please email me with your question and i'll get back to you!
Before I started painting, I decided on a colour scheme for my army as a whole. Obviously bone was to be included, I chose a dark red for the clothes/banners etc, andbrown and silver for the weapons and armour. Other colours were added here and there on some of the figures, but the above are the main colours of the army.
A good tip for painting any Warmaster units, is not to stick them to their bases to paint them. Instead line them up along a piece of card and blue-tack them down. This makes them a lot easier to paint as you can paint more than one at a time (you dont need to be neat when drybrushing!)
Core Troop:
Undercoat and Basecoat:
Well, onto painting the actual models then, with the models attached to a strip of card mentioned earlier, then I painted them all black as an undercoat (It makes no difference whether you spray them or paint them - some of mine were sprayed and some were painted!).
Then all of the models were drybrushed with three different colours (drybrushing is the key to painting these dudes!). Firstly with snakebite leather, then with bleached bone and then finally with white (lightly).
Details:
The main details on the undead warmaster models are clothes and capes, weapons, armour, hair and banners.
Clothes and capes - The clothes and capes were painted dark red. A basecoat of red gore was given to the areas, which was highlighted with blood red and then a little bit with a mix of blood red and blazing orange.
Weapons - The weapons were painted with two different colours. The handles of weapons and bows were painted bestial brown and then highlighted with snakebite leather and a mix of snakebite leather and bubonic brown. The ends of spears, scythes and arrows etc. were painted with boltgun metal
Armour - Some of the models have helmets or other forms of armour on them. This was painted with boltgun metal.
Hair - The hair on some models was drybrushed with blood red, and then lightly with blazing orange.
Banners - The banners in units and characters etc. were painted red gore, and then highlighted with blood red, and then finally with a mix between blood red and blazing orange.
Characters:
Most of the characters can be painted in much the same way as normal core units. I spend more time on these models though, using neater highlighting to make them stand out more.
The cloud that lifts the wizard was painted very simply. First I gave it a coat of shadow grey, and then I drybrushed it with space wolves grey.
Chariots:
The chariots were painted with the same techniques as the core units. The main body of the chariots were painted bone, as well as the skeletons. The banner and shields red and some areas such as scythes with boltgun metal.
Skull Chukka:
The skull chukka itself was painted like I painted bone for core units.
That was basically all except for a few red areas.
Bases:
I based all of my models in the same way. Firstly, I painted the bases goblin green.
Then the base was covered with PVA glue and then flock was puit on it.
The rocks were painted black and then drybrushed with codex grey.
The round bases for some characters are actually 1p and 2p coins!
Well, that's it. That's how I painted my army. In the future I hope to add more units such as carrion, bone throwers and a deadly zombie dragon. When I do i will update this page!
